An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and proficient Business Support Officer to work with Health and Justice commissioners.

This post will be embedded within the East Midlands Health and Justice (H&J) Commissioning team, working in a hybrid way, combining home working with some travel to meetings and our services across the region.

You will be required to be a proactive team player in a fast paced and dynamic team. You will need to be a professional administrator. You will support the whole team with a focus on the custodial portfolio.

Working both as a team member and independently, you will be able to multitask, work under pressure to meet deadline, and handle confidential information with care.

Fixed term until 31st March 2024.

Please note this role is working for NHSE but hosted by NHS Arden and GEM CSU.


The duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide high quality administration support taking minutes and providing project management support
  • Undertake information/project analysis.
  • Maintain data collection systems for its effective use by the team.
  • Support the senior team and Commissioning Manager(s) in managing the range of Custodial and noncustodial contracts within the Health & Justice portfolio
  • Support the continual improvement of an endtoend commissioning and contract management processes


You will be organised and conscientious with the ability to work under pressure, planning and co-ordinating workloads to meet deadlines.

A common-sense approach to work is important, as well as being able to handle sensitive information in a professional manner.

The post holder will be required to have a proficient level of competency in using, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Office, in particular Word, Excel, and Outlook.


The NHS Long Term Plan focuses on delivering integrated care to patients at the local level and how we can best support the NHS to deliver this as a single integrated organisation.


Local health systems are supported by our integrated regional teams who play a major leadership role in the geographies they manage.

The NHS England Health and Justice Commissioning Team is responsible for contracting and developing healthcare services in the following settings:

  • Prisons and Young Offender Institutes
  • Police custody and courts (Liaison and Diversion, Reconnect, Mental Health Treatment Requirements (MHTR) and Court Healthcare)
  • Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs)
  • Children Secure Estates


As the Business Support Officer, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service, supporting managers and staff across the Health and Justice team in the East Midlands in the delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan, providing support to develop, in partnership with local health and criminal justice agencies, pathways and plans that deliver seamless, whole systems care and support to people in touch with, or at risk of being in touch with, the criminal justice system.

The post holder will support the commissioning and redesign of services across the custodial and non-custodial workstreams and projects.


In addition, the post holder will provide contract administration support and support the delivery of internal monthly reporting across the custodial and non-custodial pathway.


The post holder will support the senior team including Commissioning Manager(s) in the day to day administration and management of Improvement Projects and/ or contracts and performance.


In particular the post holder will:

  • Provide high quality administration support including project management support
  • Undertake information/project analysis.
  • Maintain data collection systems for its effective use by the team.
  • Report on data and monitor the processing of data and information.
  • Provides information to project lead on project and statistical information matters.
  • Support the senior team and Commissioning Manager(s) in managing the range of Custodial and noncustodial contracts within the Health & Justice portfolio
  • Support the collation of complex finance, quality and performance data to enable the Commissioners and Contract Officers to analyse, raise any queries with providers and manage this through the Contract;
  • Support the continual improvement of an end to end commissioning and contract management processes
  • Provide administration function to support contract review meetings and processes across custodial and noncustodial contracts
  • Coordinate the preparation of internal assurance reporting
  • Assist in the delivery of any transformational work programmes which fall within the commissioning responsibility
