An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced individual to become the Phlebotomy Department Lead at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust; This permanent Band 5 position would be well suited to an enthusiastic, motivated phlebotomist or from a clinical background, with supervisory, leadership and management experience.


The post holder will be responsible for coordinating, monitoring and validating the activities of routine blood collection across inpatient and outpatient areas of the acute hospital.

The post holder will ensure that services are delivered to high standards of safety and quality by well trained and competent practitioners.


Leadership and communication are key elements of this role and the post holder will be responsible for ensuring that the Phlebotomy team are well led and supported in delivering and maintaining high standards of patient care.

The post holder will develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Policies for the Phlebotomy service.


The post holder will be required to work Monday to Friday but also participate in 7 day working as necessary, occasionally covering the weekend and bank holiday to meet the needs of the department.

The post holder will work clinically to maintain skills and provide mentorship. The post holder will be supported to deliver the service and provide leadership and management by two Band 3 supervisors and a Matron

  • Liaison with phlebotomy equipment and consumable suppliers.
  • To resolve minor staffing issues with the assistance of the Human Resources department/Matron.
  • To develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Policies for the Phlebotomy service.
  • To take a lead role in the recruitment of Phlebotomists and induction and orientation programmes.
  • To observe the working practices of staff at regular intervals to ensure that Phlebotomy is being delivered to the required standard.
  • To ensure the Phlebotomy staff are aware of local working procedures and safety rules, and ensure that they have been read and understood before they commence their duties.
  • To be responsible for implementing sickness absence policy to Stage 1 level.
