We are the UK's aviation regulator and recognised as a world leader in its field.

Our activities are diverse, enabling the aviation industry to meet the highest safety standards, and we pride ourselves on our ability to adapt to the constantly evolving aviation environment.

The Role
Airspace is a crucial part of the UK's infrastructure.

Upgrading airspace is essential to open up airspace for all users, including general aviation flyers and new types of aircraft, such as drones, to provide the opportunity for reducing noise and to improve capacity for the aviation industry to reduce traffic delays when the demand returns.

Critically, the emissions savings modernisation can deliver are a key component of the UK's commitment to reach net zero by 2050.

The Department for Transport (DfT) and CAA are co-sponsors of airspace modernisation. The Airspace Modernisation Strategy (AMS) was originally published by the CAA in 2018.

This year we have refreshed the AMS extending the strategy out to 2040, placing integration of all airspace users at the core of the strategy.

That includes accommodating new aerial vehicles like drones, advanced air mobility and spacecraft. The refreshed strategy aims for simpler airspace design and supporting regulations.

It also puts sustainability as an overarching principle, to be applied through all modernisation activities, including better managing noise and helping achieve government commitments to net zero emissions.

It also aligns delivery of its elements with the ICAO Global Air Navigation Plan, providing a clear strategic path for rulemaking activities, now that the UK has left the EU and the European Aviation Safety Agency.

The refreshed strategy is made up of 9 industry-led elements, all of which require clear governance and oversight, to ensure delivery on the overall strategic aims of modernisation.

To this end, we are looking for an experienced project/program governance professional to provide for maternity cover and act as the Associate for this unique and seismic programme of work.

As an Associate you will play a pivotal role in ensuring effective oversight of delivery for all AMS initiatives.

In practice this will involve providing a secretariat function to the oversight team, supporting the wider AMS Team, liaising with CAA internal teams, and our industrial or governmental partners as well as the coordination of meetings and exchange of information.

Additional duties will include tracking project costs and progress against the plan, arranging, attending, and administrating meetings as well as the collation of data and writing of regular reports/updates to a publishable standard.

These reports will form an integral part of reporting on AMS progress to Government and your findings will go on to advise key decision-making processes within the AMS Governance Structure.

This is an outstanding role for someone who is looking to develop their career in Project Management.

Not only will it offer you the opportunity to support one of the most ambitious programs of change ever implemented in UK aviation history, but you will also be empowered to oversee delivery, track progress, and draw conclusions on performance of your own associated projects within the Strategy.

You will also be exposed to various project/program delivery and management models and metrics, with a scope of expanding and testing your knowledge through assisting other members of the team.

About You

  • Possess the ability to foster positive, longlasting relationships with all manner of partners at all levels of business
  • Demonstrable organisational skills and experience in combination with a high attention to detail
  • Experienced in the office administration, include meeting minutes, stakeholder engagement events and workshops organisation, handling agendas etc
  • An appreciation or some practical experience in undertaking tasks within a governance structure or PMO/project management, ideally supported by an understanding of formal methodologies
  • Knowledge of the Quality Management System ISO9001:2015 standards and practices would be advantageous

What Can We Offer You?

This is a rare and exciting opportunity to play a vital role in one of the most complex modernisation programmes of UK airspace.

Your work will support policy and strategy decision making at the very highest levels and will help facilitate new technologies and innovations including commercial space flight and drone operations.
