Job Summary

The IWM has five sites:

  • IWM London
  • HMS Belfast London
  • Churchill War Rooms, London
  • IWM Duxford, Cambridgeshire
  • IWM North, Trafford, Greater Manchester


You will lead the development and delivery of a portfolio of masterplan and capital projects across our five sites to bring about positive change to the long-term galleries/displays, visitor facilities and IWM's business as a whole.

Leading multi-disciplinary teams and working closely with colleagues and stakeholders, you will deliver the agreed vision and outcomes for approved projects and programmes.

You will ensure a consistent and integrated approach across projects and programmes to manage resources, risk and financial impact.


Your duties will include:


Leadership and management

  • As a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT) play a key role in developing the forward corporate strategy for IWM
  • Advocate for IWM's long term vision and strategic aims championing and promoting them to colleagues, stakeholders and partners
  • Provide clear direction and line management for the project/programme leaders responsible for delivering projects and programmes

Project/programme development and delivery

  • Work collaboratively with the Director General, Executive Team and SMT to develop coherent, visitor focused masterplans, creative and financially sustainable capital project and programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with the AD Estates, Projects & Sustainability on delivery phases of masterplanning and major projects.
  • Lead on the preparation of feasibility studies, briefs, and business cases.
  • Commission evaluations, surveys, etc
  • Take responsibility for the overall coherence and visitor focus of projects/programmes and the delivery of the objectives and planned benefits set out in business cases.
  • Act as project director for significant projects/programmes.
  • Maintain a resource capacity plan mapping available resources against projects/programmes, ensuring they are adequately resourced.
  • Manage schedules and budgets to ensure that all projects/programmes are delivered to the agreed quality, timeframes, and budgets while maximising opportunities and minimising risks to IWM.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to manage the dependencies and interfaces between projects/programmes.
  • Commission and direct highquality consultants, e.g., architects, exhibition designers, project managers and contractors.
  • Lead on risk management across all masterplanning projects/programmes and work collaboratively to resolve risks and issues.
  • Ensure that IWM's project management processes and procedures are followed.
  • Establish advisory boards as appropriate to provide assurance for projects/programmes.
  • Attend the Masterplanning Board

Communications

  • Build strong and effective working relationships with SMT to ensure that impact of projects on the organisation is effectively managed.
  • Communicate effectively with staff at all levels formally and informally through staff briefings and other events.
  • Build strong relationships with key external stakeholders, e.g., planning authorities, Historic England, neighbouring landowners and partners.

Reporting

  • Report on progress and ensure projects/programmes are approved at appropriate stages by relevant governance boards including project/progamme boards, Masterplanning Board, Trustee Estates Advisory Committee, Trustee Board.
  • When / where required, provide input to other governance boards that Masterplanning has linkages with, e.g., Estates & Infrastructure Board, Collection Management Board, Income Generation Board.

General responsibilities

  • Actively promote and implement IWM's strategy for widening access, inclusion and diversity.
  • Actively promote and implement IWM's sustainability strategy to improve environmental performance and reduce our carbon footprint.
  • Follow and encourage an entrepreneurial approach, proactively seeking and actioning ideas which help IWM achieve its overall purpose, objectives, strategy and vision.
  • To keep up to date with changing technology to assist more efficient and effective working.
  • Be security conscious, ensure familiarity and cooperation with all museum security procedures.
  • Work actively to reduce the museum's impact on the environment and minimise running costs in all areas.
  • Be actively committed to health and safety and ensure familiarity with all of the Museum's health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Prepare and present effective and appropriate reports on complex and diverse issues to the Executive Team and SMT to aid decisionmaking and performance monitoring.
