MKUH has an exciting vacancy in its senior operational leadership team which is looking to attract someone seeking an Executive level post in the near future.

The Assistant Director of Operations for Planned care and Surgical Services will cover the lead Divisional Manager for the Surgical Division and an additional responsibility of designated deputy for the Chief Operating Officer.


We are looking for a self-motivated, forward thinking and patient focussed individual with a proven track record in operational delivery to join the senior management team and divisional triumvirate to drive forward the recovery and future transformation of services.

This post covers an enhanced responsibility and opportunity to lead the Trust Planned Care agenda and deputise for the Director of Operations in periods of absence in addition to heading up the Surgical Division and being a key member of the Clinical Divisional operational management team and triumvirate.


It will provide the necessary development and opportunities for those seeking a future Executive role in the next few years, who are seeking to build and expand upon their senior operational experience and work closely with the Board.


Together with other posts in the Divisional "Triumvirate" they will set and deliver a multidisciplinary Divisional and CSU (Clinical Service Unit) strategy and vision that enables the delivery of the Trust objectives.

Together they influence the Trust's future and provide a visible, effective and shared leadership and act within the Divisional Triumvirate and with their colleagues, accepting accountability for the services provided to and for patients.

Deputise for the Director of Operations / COO across the full range of their duties in his/her absence.


Working on behalf of the Director of Operations with Associate Director of Performance deliver robust internal performance management programme for Planned Care which enables the Trust to adhere to or exceed plans, standards and targets, delivering the reduction on backlogs and improving waiting times.


Ensure robust governance structures monitor and track performance and to satisfy reporting requirements and act as a key liaison with local external partners on Planned Care.


Ensure robust annual planning cycle is in place with Finance and Performance teams, which aligns system plans to deliver agreed activity levels, providing appropriate input and challenge where required for Planned Care.

Communication & Relationship skills


The postholder will be able to convey highly contentious information in situations of proposed major change and deal with potentially hostile and antagonistic responses and behaviours when they occur.

They must have significant experience in influencing and negotiating on the

delivery of services and be able to lead effective engagement processes with strategic stakeholders.

Policy and Service Development


Corporate responsibility for delivery of the Planned Care agenda across the Trust and impacts beyond the organisation into MK Place and the BLMK Integrated Care System (ICB).


To work towards the Trust being performance being at upper quartile in all areas of measured performance in Planned care - GIRFT and Model Hospital.
