What does a Learning Support Assistant do at Hillingdon?


This position is for Sessional Learning Support Assistants, the salary is based on an hourly rate.
This role, and the support it provides for learners, is essential for them to achieve their goals.

Learning as an adult, with all the responsibilities that entails, is challenging, and especially so for those who have recognised learning needs or undiagnosed learning difficulties or disabilities.


You will be part of the Learning Support team working with learners and teaching staff and reporting to the Programme Area Leader.


You will provide learners with high quality support to enable them to achieve their course goals in individual lessons and throughout the programme of learning, ensuring success for individual learners and the curriculum as a whole.


Key Responsibilities include:


  • Support and ensure a suitable learning environment which is safe and enables learning, both within Adult Education centers and in external settings.
  • Recognize the individual needs, issues and challenges that learners may have and provide appropriate support to enable the learners to access learning in the most appropriate way.
  • Work with teaching staff on the initial, diagnostic, formative and summative assessments of learners including evaluation of learning support provided.
  • Support the creation of appropriate resources to aid learners in accessing learning activities and achieving their goal.
About you


Do you want to make a difference in the lives of others and work within an aspirational education setting, that wants and expects the best for its staff and learners? Previous experience of supporting learning in an educational environment is essential, as is effective communication and working as part of a team and independently.

You will have a Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant Qualification or will be willing to undertake such a qualification.

You will be aware of how to support adults with developing underpinning skills, e.g. English, maths, digital and independent living skills, and have knowledge of different learning styles.

You will also be able to use a variety of strategies and interventions to support engagement and learning and have a can-do attitude.


Key skills required for this role include excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to clearly address different learning audiences.

Continuous reflection on practice and adapting to learners' needs to provide the best individualized support for each learner are essential.


Good self-management and strong IT skills to ensure learners are effectively supported and to record the impact of that support in a timely manner.
