Job summary:


The Infection Sciences department at North Bristol NHS Trust is formed from a collaboration between the UK Health Security Agency and North Bristol NHS Trust (Severn Pathology).

This is a busy and forward-looking laboratory that receives in excess of 1.3 million specimens a year from a large number of clinical specialities located within Bristol and Bath hospital trusts, and beyond, which contribute to an interesting and varied workload.

The laboratory is located within North Bristol NHS Trust and is a new, modern and fully automated laboratory incorporating state of the art equipment.

It lies within easy reach of the city of Bath and surrounding villages.

We have close links with our host Trusts as well as both Universities in Bristol and the proximity of the motorway network makes an ideal base for travel to London, the Midlands, Wales and the coastal resorts of the Southwest.


The UKHSA/NBT collaboration employs approximately 200 staff performing a range of diagnostic, public health and research activities, including high containment level work.


The post holder will assist the Laboratory Safety Officer (Safety Manager) with ensuring that the Severn Pathology Infection Sciences department meets the requirements of Health and Safety and Bio-security legislation and Corporate Health and Safety strategy, policy and procedures.


The post holder would be expected to assist in any UKHSA coordinated response or activity of a national/international nature, e.g.

a Bioterrorism incident or a major disease outbreak, e.g. CoVID-19.


You will be assisting with the development and administration of procedures to ensure compliance with Health and Safety in specialist areas.

You will need to assist with the production of regular Health and Safety reports for Severn Pathology Infection Sciences Management, or other stakeholders as required, including Trackwise report summaries.


The postholder will contribute to the development of health and safety standards and systems applied to the whole of Science Group SMS and UKHSA.

Promoting the image of Science Group SMS and UKHSA as a centre of excellence in safety through personal example and maintaining safety awareness.

This is a lab-based role located onsite at Southmead Hospital, Bristol.

Job description:

As the Deputy Laboratory Safety Officer your main responsibilities will include:

  • Maintain close liaison with, scientific, technical, engineering, estates, maintenance and administrative staff to ensure high standards of Health & Safety.
  • Actively maintain a high level of awareness of Health & Safety practice and legislation. Maintain and develop a high level of understanding of the nature and significance of the work carried out by the scientific, technical, engineering, estates, maintenance and administrative staff with whom they are associated.
  • Support the work of the Laboratory Supervisors and other members of the Departmental Safety Committee in respect to health and safety matters
  • Support the Safety Manager with ensuring that safe systems of work are in place for all staff and contractors, and that they are being implemented. Highlight any critical issues to the Safety Manager, Operational Lead and Head of Department. In their absence, authorise the stopping of any work deemed to seriously compromise the safety of individuals or the integrity of the organisation.
  • Assist with the ongoing review of all risk assessments that are applicable to the Department, to ensure that they are suitable, sufficient and in date.
  • Assist with the design and delivery of regular inspection programmes (e.g. H&S inspections, Visual electrical checks etc.) that are carried out in all teams.
  • Contribute to the system of auditing and seeking assurance of health and safety in accordance with UKHSA policies and procedures and the National Infection Service's Health and Safety plan. Support the timely progression of Health and Safety actions arising from incident investigations, inspections and audits.
