Overview of project/role


Leading a team of train maintainers and deputising for the Duty Manager as required, the post holder will organise and allocate work to meet weekly work schedules, re-prioritising, as needed, to cater for unplanned casualty repairs and other priority needs.

To achieve this, a daily allocation of rolling stock will be organised to ensure planned maintenance is completed whilst at the same time providing a sufficient stock of trains to meet the demands of time tabled service requirements.

In addition, the post holder will control all train movements within the depot and ensure trains are prepared for service.


Key Accountabilities

  • Securing sufficient resources to ensure the key maintenance priorities of the Depot Plan can be met.
  • Organise the efficient allocation of rolling stock to ensure sufficient availability of trains to meet the needs of the time tabled service whilst ensuring all maintenance requirements and standards are fully complied with the optimum reliability is achieved.
  • Organise and control all train movements within depot limits, to ensure shunting is carried out efficiently and safely.
  • Organise the initial investigation to identify the causes of train defects, especially those necessitating service withdrawals, and maintain accurate records of defects and causes to provide high quality management information that will identify failure trends and patterns.
  • React swiftly to changing demands and business goals by adapting workloads and programmes accordingly.
  • Provide for the development and training of individuals to ensure that everyone has the necessary training and licences.
  • Ensure compliance with company rules and safety procedures and administer the Permit to Work procedures to ensure internal and contractors' staff are provided with a safe working environment.
  • Provide an atmosphere conducive to effort where high levels of staff performance and productivity are achieved through effective motivation communication, encouragement, practical advice and hands on assistance.
  • Be a committed and active member of the Depot Team by being prepared to contribute to the overall performance of the line in achieving the company's business objectives.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Management of Safety

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety At Work Act and associated legislation i.e. Electricity at Work Act; C.O.S.H.H; Noise Regulations
  • Knowledge of Metronet's Safety Directives, Business Unit Safety Rules and Operating Procedures and Safety Management Systems.

Weekly Schedule

  • Knowledge of planning systems in operation at the relevant depot.
  • Thorough knowledge of planned maintenance programmes and the need to incorporate unplanned casualty repairs into work schedules.
  • Detailed knowledge of weekly maintenance schedules.
  • Knowledge and experience of completing casualty repairs with the ability to quantify job times and types to enable proper prioritisation work.
  • Detailed knowledge of depot facilities and resource availability.
  • Ability to plan and organise resources, and prioritise work to ensure all maintenance work is completed or rescheduled swiftly so that a sufficient number of reliable trains are available to consistently meet the needs of the service.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of facilities, manpower, rolling stock availability and productive work completed such that planning schedules can be completed in good time.

Rolling Stock Availability

  • Knowledge of fleet size, service, timetables, stabling facilities and workable spare stock allocations throughout the line.
  • Ability to maintain accurate train maintenance requirement records
  • Ability to organise rolling stock allocation to ensure trains are correctly stabled for maintenance work and stock rotation is maintained.

Train Movement with Depot

  • Knowledge of Rules and Procedures for shunting of trains in depots.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with: layout of depots; use of points; types of shunting moves; local safety rules and procedures; the role of cabin/tower operators, and methods of depot communications.
  • Ability to drive trains safely in depots, paying particular attention to braking.
  • Ability to supervise and authorise movement around the depots and operate shunting control facilities.
  • Ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining the safety of the train movement system.

Monitor Team Performance

  • Knowledge of team objectives, team members' roles and duties.
  • Knowledge of work programmes to prepare trains for service and the scope of work likely to be reported on trouble cards.
