King's Norton Boys' School (KNBS) has a long history of outdoor education, which to this day is still a very popular addition to the students' school lives.

While the wide range of activities on offer continues to grow, the impact remains the same, enriching students' lives and inspiring young people to achieve at the very highest level.

Engaging in the wide spectrum of experiences available provides opportunities for students to participate in new and exciting activities and to develop skills imperative for adulthood.

The initial role will be an assistant instructor, working with the Head of Outdoor Education.

Training will be given on the job where you will gain the knowledge, experience and qualifications required to become an independent instructor leading your own groups.

You will learn how to operate to a highly professional and safe standard, creating a challenging, fun and educational environment providing equal opportunities to all.


You will also have the opportunity and encouragement to engage and oversee school based curricular and extra-curricular programmes such as Eco Schools Green Flag Award, Active Travel Ambassadors, Duke of Edinburgh Award and Student Leadership.


Day to day duties:


  • To work with the Head of Outdoor Education (HOE) in the day to day running of the department
  • Support the HOE in planning and delivering outdoor education visits & residentials
  • Supporting and teaching students' aspects of the KNBS Outdoor Education programme.
  • Learning and supporting the HOE with kit maintenance and repairs.
  • Taking a key lead on school curricula and extra curricula programmes.
  • To assist with school displays and marketing of Outdoor Education within school and the local community
  • Any other duties reasonably requested and specifically directed by the Head of Outdoor Education or Head Teacher.

Desirable skills and qualifications:


  • Experience of working in an outdoor environment
  • Experience of outdoor activities eg; sailing, canoeing, mountain biking and rock climbing either leading or participating
  • Membership of any outdoor groups (Scouts, DofE, activity clubs)
  • First Aid qualification/experience
  • Experience of working with young people.
  • Experience of working throughout a busy day
  • Have an understanding of how to behave in a professional setting with students and colleagues
  • Coaching qualifications relevant to the post
  • Proficient in riding a bike off road (Essential)
  • A minimum of GCSE grade E-D/23 in functional skills in Maths and English ( or be working towards level 2 in Maths and English) is essential.

You should be well motivated with a desire to improve and develop both; your personal skills and those skills required to facilitate and deliver safe and educational adventurous activities


Future Prospects:

Possible employment in educational settings having gained experience and qualifications for employment in the outdoor sector.

Salary:
National apprenticeship wage


Working Hours:36.5 hours per week


Open to under 18s? Due to the nature of the role and the safeguarding commitments we are only able to accept students aged 18+
