Background


Applications are invited for a Part-time research position for a project entitled 'The gut MICRObiome and COgnition in SubMariners (MICROCOSM)'.

The expected start date is 01/06/2024. This is an eighteen-month position funded by the Ministry of Defence, at 0.5FTE.

The primary aim of this project is to: a) map the composition of the gut microbiome of a submarine crew before, during and after deployment, b) measure sleep/circadian rhythms, aspects of mental health and perform testing to assess cognitive performance, c) measure other key markers of metabolic health e.g. height, body weight and waist circumference. This position is focussed on the sleep/circadian, mental health and cognitive performance aspects of the project.


The project is a collaboration between the Institute for Microbiology and Infection, the Centre for Human Brain Health (CHBH), and the School of Psychology (SoP) at the University of Birmingham; the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB); and the Royal Navy.


The researcher will analyse actigraphy data for sleep/circadian rhythms, cognitive tests and questionnaires for mental health and link these data with measures from the gut microbiome.

The researcher will have overall responsibility for analysing these data, and will liaise with a wider team of researchers at IMI, CHBH, SoP and QEHB.

Main Duties

  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews
  • Analyse research data as directed
  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters
  • Develop or adapt techniques, models and methods
  • Provide guidance as required to support staff and any students who may be assisting with research
  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines
  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research
  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture

Person Specification

  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively
  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
