Pastoral Support Advisor - 25 hours per week
To provide support to the school working on specific priorities focusing on parenting support.


The PSA is a demanding and busy position in our school, which incorporates a number of roles:

Parent Support Advisor - regular communication with parents; signposting parents to help; preventative and early intervention activities; Early Help Lead;

  • Promote the selfesteem of parents/carers to help them to maximise their own personal and interpersonal skills, which will enable them to respond to family needs by communicating openly and to provide good parenting.
  • Share information on practical and parenting skills, identifying need for support including how to meet the emotional needs of children (e.g. setting boundaries and consistent discipline).
  • To provide impartial information or referrals to parents about schools and relevant local services available to parents, children and families including those provided by education, social care, youth justice, childcare providers, the
voluntary sector and others.

  • Liaise with other PSA's and school staff on access to local programmes and services.

Attendance Mentor - monitoring attendance of all pupils; following attendance policy; liaising with parents and EWO;

LAC lead - ensuring excellent provision for Looked-after pupils; liaising with Virtual Schools and social workers; attending LAC reviews and completing PEPs;

Designated Safeguarding Lead - recording all liaising with external agencies; attending meetings; completing Safeguarding concern referral forms; liaising with parents and teachers; monitoring pupils at risk; It is essential to keep records and all documentation pertaining to meetings/contact with children and young people and their families; and to undergo regular safeguarding training.


Person Spec:


  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to travel to attend meetings/CPD as required.
  • Previous experience of working with children and families in the public, private or voluntary section.
  • Excellent communication, listening and observation skills.
  • Ability to work within a team
  • Ability to deal with difficult/sensitive situations
  • Ability to facilitate groups
  • Ability to handle confidential information
  • Organisational abilities and accurate record keeping skills/use of CPoms
  • Ability to facilitate parenting skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Previous experience with inter agency working (Health/Social Services etc.)
  • Willingness to attend evening meetings
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of child growth and development
  • Knowledge of the parenting needs of children
  • Knowledge of basic child protection issues
  • Understanding of diversity and antidiscriminatory practice
  • Knowledge of special educational needs
  • Resources within area
