Following approval of a new business case, we are expanding our dietetic service within Neonates. This post is for Clinical Lead Paediatric Dietitian for Neonates. You will be responsible for developing our current neonatal service and supporting the recruitment of additional team members.


The additional funding is for 0.82 wte, we would welcome applicants who wish to work up to fulltime hours as we have other funding available.


The post holder will provide specialist dietetic services to sick and preterm infants (Neonates) at University Hospitals of North Midlands.

Using highly specialised knowledge and skills to ensure evidence based nutritional assessment, treatment and management for all Neonates requiring specialist nutritional interventions.

The post holder will be the Lead Clinician in developing, planning, co-ordinating, delivering and evaluating the Neonatal Dietetic Service, working alongside therapy colleagues, the wider MDT and the Neonatal Network Dietitian in the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network (WMNODN) to support the development, implementation and audit of dietetic protocols.

To work as part of the Paediatrics Dietetics Team as Clinical Lead for Neonatal Dietetics.

Using your sound knowledge of the physiological development in term and preterm infants, considering gestational age and the impact this has on nutritional interventions.

You will work as an autonomous practitioner without direct supervision, to ensure safe practice by carrying & prioritising a designated, highly specialised clinical caseload within the neonatal unit, transitional care and supporting timely discharge home for some of our most vulnerable babies who require ongoing dietetic support at home.


You will be welcomed as part of the Neonatal MDT and will support the service improvement, audit and research initiatives.

You will lead a team of neonatal dietitans and work closely with our established paediatric dietetic team.

To ensure safe practice by carrying & prioritising a designated, highly specialised clinical caseload, working as an autonomous practitioner without direct supervision.

To attend medical ward rounds and provide sound, evidence based and highly specialised clinical advice to the Neonatal Team.


To have a sound knowledge of the physiological development in term and preterm infants, considering gestational age whilst understanding the impact this has on nutritional interventions.


To demonstrate autonomy in assessing Neonates with complex nutritional needs to include the interpretation of complex biochemistry, anthropometrics, clinical condition and dietary intake information.


To use clinical reasoning skills, previous experience and knowledge of treatment options to devise individual dietetic treatment plans for all Neonates whilst considering their medical, social and psychological needs.


To monitor and evaluate dietetic treatment plans to measure progress, ensure effectiveness and to quickly identify when treatment requires modifying.

To calculate complex feeding regimens and make prompt, effective decisions regarding changes to these plans.


To have a clear understanding of the principles of parenteral and enteral nutrition in Neonates and to contribute to the development and review of dietetic protocols and pathways for these infants in collaboration with Clinical Leads, Pharmacists and WMNODN.


To use and critically appraise the evidence base / best practice to support parents/carers and staff to ensure Neonates have optimal nutritional intake to support growth and development.
