The Surgical Specialties Division is looking for a highly motivated and dynamic Thoracic Clinical Fellow (SpR level) to join the prestigious University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


The Thoracic Surgery service is based in UCLH at Westmoreland Street Hospital and offers comprehensive care for the whole spectrum of thoracic patients.


The Thoracic service serves the population of North Central London and the team regularly carry out clinics in our partner hospitals to ensure that patients have access to timely, local care.

The team is involved in all of the lung cancer MDTs across the network.

60% of the surgery is carried out by mínimally invasive means:
There is a VATS lobectomy programme, a Robotic surgical list and a tracheal resection service.

Within the rota there is time that is set aside for attending clinics. Clinical Fellows may be asked to undertake clinics at other times in the rota. You are expected to maintain satisfactory patient notes, to write discharge letters and summaries.


University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) is one of the most complex NHS trusts in the UK, serving a large and diverse population.


The Surgery and Cancer Board at UCLH comprises of five Divisions - Theatres and Anaesthesia, Gastrointestinal Services, Surgical Specialties, Cancer Services, and Imaging.

The Board is responsible for many exciting strategic developments, which has included the opening of the new Macmillan Cancer Centre in 2012.

The department offers comprehensive specialist care for patients requiring thoracic surgery. The service is co-located with Urology Surgery in a standalone specialist surgery unit on Westmoreland St, in Marylebone.


The service comprises five consultants:
Mr David Lawrence, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon (Clinical Lead)

Mr Nick Panagiotopoulos, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon

Mr Davide Patrini, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon

Mr Kunal Bhakhri, Consultant Thoracic Surgeon

Mr Martin Hayward, Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


Clinical Training and Responsibilities:


  • To assist in the care of Thoracic patients, under the supervision of consultants
  • To attend theatre and assist the Consultant Surgeons
  • To cover the wards
  • To complete discharge summaries on the day of discharge
  • To supervise SHOs and other clinical staff as appropriate
  • To participate in outpatient clinics
  • To carry out transfer of patients where necessary
  • To maintain clinical records including clinical letters and diagnostic
  • To maintain the patients case notes and record events on a daily basis with all contributions to the notes clearly written and signed with name
  • On call commitment to Thoracic surgery rota (On call from home 1:4)
  • To participate in Thoracic Surgery MDT's and teaching session (weekly)
  • To assist in coordinating admissions in conjunction with the Bed Manage

Non-clinical training and responsibilities:


  • To share in Thoracic surgery administration including planning of rotas
  • To participate in the unit's research activities
  • To participate in teaching of medical students
  • To participate in audit and clinical governance
