JOB TITLE:
Design Lead





KEY PURPOSE:
Controlling internal and external Design Package deliverables, Managing tender design process and ensuring technical governance of project outputs in line with CDM requirements


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES; To ensure all technical deliverables are produced on time and to the satisfaction of the client/project manager and in line with engineering standards and best practice, including CDM and safety standards including leading all design team members internally and externally to achieve a favourable project outcome.

  • Assist the planner in developing and keeping up to date the detailed design management project programme.
  • Develop and maintain the design deliverables plan in collaboration with the project delivery team including all technical upstream and downstream delivery requirements.
  • Supply chain management when developing the design including ensuring supplier tenders are checked for compliance and engineering correctness.
  • Development of scheme tender designs and management of estimating in the completion of a project estimate that includes robust pricing for the design or risk where a conformed price is not available.
  • Manage design inputs and outputs upstream including TQ register.
  • Liaise with clients to ensure design considerations are understood before decisions are made
  • Attend all Hazard studies and ensure all competencies are present during these processes so the robust, diverse design decisions are made with the correct people present.
  • Manage design risk register and update key technical risks as they arise.
  • Ensure designs are delivered putting safety first and that HSE risks are documented and understood.
  • Keep up to date as regards engineering standards, systems and procedures including YW/UU standards, british standards, codes and best practices
  • Provide regular updates to commercial team, project manager and client technical team.
  • Prepare downstream technical specifications and particular specifications to allow supplier engagement.
  • Provide technical governance to supply chain and align this with client requirements.
  • Carry out any reasonable tasks, activities or requirements as instructed.
  • Provide engineering authority and instruction to more junior members of the team
  • Develop engineering systems and procedures as necessary to improve department function and efficiency
  • Complete technical tasks as required to meet the design management plan within area of expertise or ensure this is done by suitably experienced resource in line with the necessary deliverables where other engineering skills are required.
  • Follow companyengineering standards, systems and procedures.
  • Assess competency of supply chain, internal and external resources to ensure competency and safe design development against scheme requirements including relevant standards of best practise.
  • Manage both internal and external resources.

Essential

  • Engineering Degree qualified and working towards C-Eng status.
  • 5 years plus Water and Wastewater design experience.
  • Familiar with Mechanical, Electrical, process and Civil project requirements as required to successfully deliver full turnkey water and wastewater schemes to Water Companies
  • Familiar with Key Water Treatment equipment packages and supply chain integration into tier 1 delivery requirements
  • Knowledge of Civil Engineering/ M&E techniques and processes.
  • Good IT skills including CAD, Word and Excel.
  • Good time management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Understanding of CDM and ability to act as the principle designers nominated competent person
