Job Introduction
New Scientist is the world's leading weekly science and tech magazine, with five million readers across all its platforms.

With teams based in the UK, US and Australia, and also a thriving events business, we lead the way in the very best of science and technology journalism.

We now seek an exceptional, highly motivated and extremely organised individual to run our art department.


This is a hands-on role at the heart of our editorial team, working closely with a committed team of science and tech journalists.

You will be responsible for overseeing the design of the weekly print magazine, working on the growth of our readership in the US, as well as supporting and helping to evolve our digital vision, and working closely with other departments across New Scientist.


This role requires someone who knows the difference between linear and logarithmic scale, and believes infographics should be as gorgeous as they are educational.

It also requires someone who has managed a team of designers before and know how to get the best out of them while providing them with the tools to learn and grow.

An interest or at least openness to science and technology will be a strong advantage.

Main Responsibilities:


  • Responsible for the visual look and feel of New Scientist Magazine and all the associated marketing materials.
  • Lead on the daytoday delivery of art and design for the print magazine and oversee as well as develop and evolve the magazine style as required by the editor, using the best possible contributors to do so.
  • The role is handson, designing exceptional layouts and front covers, finding creative design solutions that surprise and delight the readers.
  • You will have the ability to confidently communicate the design direction for the magazine to the team as well as constantly assessing the needs and wants of our readers, effectively pitching the design to work for the demographic.

Person Specification

  • Experience on a Media / Publishing brand essential
  • Fully competent in the use of Adobe InDesign Adobe CC, Adobe Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Experience with Canva and similar online design tools
  • Solid understanding of infographics
  • Experience on the art desk of a major publication is desirable.
  • Ability to generate visual ideas.
  • Ability to Art Direct photoshoots and commission illustrators
  • Good understanding of current trends in the magazine market
  • Ability to forge excellent working relationships with teams.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects, collaborative approach to working with multiple editorial teams' Genuine enthusiasm for the work produced across New Scientist brands.
  • Ability to absorb and adapt to different ways of working of different brands.
  • Ability to prioritise most pressing work despite competing pressures.
  • Strong ability to contribute ideas, communicate and create a supportive team environment.
  • Video experience a plus
  • Experience with template design and management
  • Understanding digital channels and how to position design online.
