Background to the Post


The programme is specifically designed to engage with 16-25 year olds who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs) and provides them with an opportunity to reengage in learning, participate in community projects, team work and individual work placements.

Participants to the programme may exhibit challenging behaviours and the post holder will be expected to work effectively with this group.

The programme gives young people a unique opportunity to work as a team in undertaking worthwhile and challenging activities.


To ensure that all our students reach their potential and are not discriminated against we wish to appoint an assistant Team Leader to provide support to the three Team Leaders on their programmes and cover the delivery of the programme in the Team Leader's absence.


The purpose of this post is to assist the team leader and provide support to the students on the team programme.

Time will be spent with students in the classroom who need extra help to keep them focussed, on task and up to date.

The Programme will require the post holder to accompany the students on the residential between 3 to 9 times per year and off-site or to other centres to undertake projects, enterprises or other activities associated with the course programme.

There will be a requirement to undertake administrative tasks relating to student retention and achievement.


The person appointed will report to the Co-ordinator and work alongside the DRN team leaders as directed by the Co-ordinator.

The post will work and support programmes at delivery locations in London areas.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • To provide support in class, or support outside the classroom as directed by the DRN Co-ordinator.
  • To assist the DRN team leaders with the preparation of materials or activities for named student use.
  • To work closely with the team to ensure that individual student targets are being monitored and reviewed.
  • In conjunction with the team, maintain a system to record named student progress.
  • With knowledge/permission of the DRN team leader, make contact with parents, guardians or key workers of those students under 18, either by telephone or in writing.
  • To act as a trouble-shooter and work with the students to ensure they meet deadlines and catch-up on any missed work.
  • To accompany and support students during work experience placements, and/or trips, residentials both on and off site if appropriate.
  • To undertake administrative duties which will include keeping own record book, sending absence notes/cause for concern forms to team members, updating the team with student progress report.
  • Work collaboratively with the team to produce Individual Risk Assessment, Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans and Medical Protocols.
  • Contribute to student reports if required.
  • Contribute to additional learning support reporting, as required.

Annual Leave


DRN offers a generous annual leave entitlement to support staff, commencing with 25 days rising to 28 days after 5 years' service, per annum plus 8 statutory days (Public & bank Holidays).


Hours of Work


The post holder will be expected to work such hours as are necessary for the proper performance of their duties and responsibilities, normally 37 hours per week and possibly an occasional Saturday and participate in residentials.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Physical Make-up

Essential Attainments:


  • GCSE Grade C or above in English and
  • Mathematics, or Level 2 equivalent qualification.
  • An appropriate professional qualification at Level 2 (e.g. GCSEs Grades A-C,
  • Level 2 NVQ, Level 2 Diploma or equivalent qualifications).
  • A First Aid qualification or willingness to gain this.
  • Previous experience of student support / working with students.
  • Previous experience of working with students with challenging behaviours and special educational needs.
  • Previous experience working in the following sectors/roles; youth leader, youth worker, youth mentor, youth instructor/coach, activities leader, sports coach, charity worker, education leader and SEN support or related positions.

Desirable Attainments:


  • Previous experience of working in Further Education with relevant


  • Vocational background

  • Sport, Basic Skills, IT, Public Services or Art.
  • Previous experience working in the following sectors/roles; youth leader, youth work
