This is a rare opportunity to join the senior MSK team and shape our future service.

Due to the career developments of two of our current matrons, we have an exciting opportunity to recruit to two Matron positions:


  • One Permanent post
  • One Fixed term/Secondment post for up to 12 months


We are looking to recruit forward thinking, initiative-taking, compassionate, and innovative nurse leaders, who will champion a high level of professional standards and excellence to join our MSK care group.


Working within the framework of the Modern Matron principles, the post holder is expected to set and monitor ambitious standards of clinical care, provide day to day operational management, and support the continuous development/improvement of the service.

Applicants will be required to demonstrate a passion to lead and develop clinical teams to provide the best possible patient care across all areas of responsibility.

Within the care group we have inpatient, outpatient, and community services.


The care group consists of:

  • Orthopaedics inpatient, trauma, outpatients, and fracture clinic
  • Hand Centre
  • Metabolic Bone Centre
  • Rheumatology
  • Therapy Services
  • Chronic Pain Services
  • Podiatric Surgery
The positions will involve cross site working.

As Matron you will be:

- a visible nurse leader and role model for a number of clinical areas with the responsibility and accountability for professional standards.
- professionally accountable and maintain the standards of professional practice as set by the appropriate regulatory body applicable to your profession or role.
- accountable for identifying and ensuring improvements in patient safety, patient experience and effectiveness of service.

  • In conjunction with the Clinical Director & Group Directorate Manager, lead the implementation and delivery of the clinical service improvement plan.
- providing expert advice to the Group Directorate on all nursing matters.
- managing a devolved budget for a number of clinical areas ensuring efficient and effective use of resources.
- required to contribute to the planning and execution of cost improvement programmes ensuring the quality of care is risk assessed and managed appropriately.

This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term contract basis for the maximum period of 12 months.

Where there is potential, the secondment/fixed term contract may finish early, or in the first instance, the secondment/fixed term contract may be extended due to the internal/external secondment of the substantive post holder.

The fixed term contract status of the post holder will be reviewed in accordance with the Trust's legal obligations regarding fixed term contracts and secondments in relation to the substantive post holder.
