Band 4 Bank Medical Secretary

Salary range - £14.88 per hour all inclusive

This will be anONLY FULL-TIMEposition.

The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital is a major international teaching centre of excellence for neuro-musculoskeletal healthcare.

Temporary Staffing Department requires Medical Secretary workers to take up temporary assignments within the trust.


The Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital operates an Admin and Clerical Bank, which plays and important role in providing comprehensive clerical support to the directorates across the Trust.

We offer a flexible approach to working which suits applicants looking for school hours or term time only work, as well those seeking full time hours on short/longer-term placements.


We are seeking competent and reliable staff who can demonstrate a strong customer focused approach who would like to join the Medical Secretary Bank.

Effort and Environment


The following information has been designed to assist the recording of the effort and environment factors required for Agenda for Change.


  • Physical
Measures the nature, level, frequency and duration of the physical effort required for the job e.g. Kneeling, crouching, work in confined space, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, running, pushing.

  • Mental
Measures the nature, level, frequency and duration of the mental effort required for the job e.g. Checking documents, calculations, analyzing statistics, operating machinery, microscope work, assessing patients, formal minute taking, assessing students.

If you have a flexible, reliable and adaptable approach you can contribute to the smooth running of the organization. You will have a pleasant telephone manner and good communication skills are essential. You will also have knowledge of Medical Terminology, be computer literate with experience of Word and Audio Typing/Secretarial skills.


These posts will provide a challenging opportunity for motivated enthusiastic individuals who wish to work in a health service environment.


The RNOH recognises that vaccination remains the best line of defence against COVID19 and encourages and supports all staff to be vaccinated.


To provide a secretarial service primarily for the consultants, to type all work with regard to clinics and operations and general correspondence from audio dictation.

2.2 Deal with all incoming telephone enquiries and written queries promptly and efficiently.


2.3 Work as a team with medical secretaries within the Unit to ensure a high-quality service is maintained at all times during office hours.

2.4 Undertake filing of correspondence, clinic notes, test results etc, in the appropriate medical notes.

2.5 Responsible for ensuring case notes and X rays are tracked using the Patient Administration System (ICS) computer system.

2.6 Maintain patient information on the Patient Administration System and the system within the Unit if appropriate.


2.7 Ensure consultant waiting lists are regularly validated and that no patient exceeds stated maximum waiting times in conjunction with Administration Manager/General Manager.

2.8 To maintain patient medical notes according to RNOH medical records policy.

2.9 To promote an open and friendly working environment.

2.10 Undertake general office duties, including photocopying, faxing and filing.

2.11 Adhere to all Trust policies and procedures relevant to your position.

2.12 Attend mandatory training.

2.13 Participate in Personal Development Plan.

2.14 Providing cover for other unit members during times of absence as delegated by the Administration Manager.

2.15 In association with the Administration Manager liaise with the call centre staff, ensuring efficiency of the unit.
