The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has recently awarded Research Unit funding to the University of Oxford and University College London for development work within the area of transfusion transmitted infections in partnership with NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) and Public Health England (PHE).

The team will comprise a Unit Director (Peter Simmonds), theme leads in areas of Next Generation Sequencing technologies (Tanya Golubchik), Viromics (Judy Breuer) and Transfusion Safety (Heli Harvala) along with representatives from NHSBT and PHE and a Programme Manager.


As a Patient and Public Involvement, Engagement and participation lead and coordinator your main duties will include: Project Management, PPIEP Innovation and Development, Communication and Networking.

The appointee PPIE lead and coordinator will be supporting the development and delivery of the PPIE Strategy for the blood and transplant research unit

  • Genomics to Enhance Microbial Screening (BTRU-GEMS). The role will include meeting with researchers to discuss their PPIE needs; supporting and at times facilitating the delivery of PPIE activities in a number of settings including inperson, online and in the community; and developing and managing a programme of engagement events with supporting communications.


You will be educated to MSc level (or hold equivalent experience) in a relevant area of research and with a demonstrable sufficient experience in developing and delivering effective PPIE activities within a health, community, research or higher education environment; understanding of the key concepts and principles of PPIE.

You will have excellent and effective communication skills with evidence of an ability to engage with people from a variety of backgrounds and facilitate communication between groups; excellent negotiating, diplomacy and influencing skills.

The post is part-time (30 hours per week) and fixed-term up to 31/03/2027.
