Description

The Respiratory Physiology Team at Kings College hospital NHS Trust (Denmark Hill) provide lung function, sleep diagnostic and treatment services and supports bronchoscopy and pleural intervention.

The current team comprises of 18 physiologists of all grades, including STP students and community based physiologists. In addition, the department offer a large number of placements for PTP students.

The provision of a full range of both routine and specialised respiratory function tests in both adults and children.


The provision of a sleep investigation service in adults and the initiation and follow up of CPAP and BiPAP treatment for patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.

Assisting in the provision of adult bronchoscopy and pleural intervention services.

Lung Function

  • The provision of a full routine lung function testing service for adults and children
  • Performing the more specialised test procedures that the department offers, without supervision. These include bronchial provocation testing, transcutaneous oxygen/ carbon dioxide monitoring, 24 hour cough monitoring and assessment for fitness to fly.
  • Calculating patients' results and preparing reports. Responsibility for the accuracy of all results. The interpretation and reporting of results for physicians and General Practitioners.
  • Responsible for routine maintenance, calibration and quality control of all laboratory equipment.
Sleep Investigation/ Treatment of Sleep Disordered Breathing

  • The provision of an overnight oximetry and limited channel sleep study service
  • The initiation and followup of home CPAP and BiPAP treatment for adult patients
Bronchoscopy and Pleural Intervention Service

  • Assisting with the organisation and provision of the bronchoscopy and pleural intervention services on a daytoday basis.
  • Care and support of patients and relatives before, during and after the procedure.
  • Knowledge and involvement in emergency procedures such as resuscitation and control of bleeding.
