Our Client has a fantastic Occupational Therapist Permanent opportunity in South West London.

It is a historic institution providing sheltered accommodation (Long Wards) and full nursing care where necessary for some 300 retired soldiers, known as In-Pensioners.

It ensures Army veterans are provided with the support and comradeship they need in recognition of their service to the Nation and safeguards their historic home for the veterans of tomorrow.

Full time/ 41 per week (which includes a paid break) working Monday - Friday

£36,137.

To provide a skilled level of occupational therapy services to the pensioners of the Hospital as an autonomous practitioner whilst observing the HCPC Standards of Professional Conduct, Performance and Ethics and the COT's Professional standards for occupationaltherapy practice, conduct and ethics and Clients policies

Job Role:
Principal Tasks

  • Under the direction of the Senior Physiotherapists, manage and take responsibility for occupational therapy caseload in an efficient manner; prioritising the caseload as necessary and clinically appropriate
  • To undertake comprehensive assessments of pensioners with cognitive impairment, complex physical disabilities and mental health difficulties or who are newly admitted to the hospital utilising both standardised and nonstandardised assessment tools; continuouslymonitor pensioners for changing needs and goals
  • To provide relevant education to patients, family and staff as appropriate to ensure high quality care
  • To work in close collaboration with all members of the multidisciplinary team and communicate with relevant members of the MDT re referrals/treatment plans/pensioner progress/education and discharge. Attend and contribute to internal multidisciplinary meetings
  • To assess and manage clinical risk factors with individual pensioners as indicated
  • To ensure consent to treatment is gained before each intervention and maintain resident's privacy, dignity and choice at all times.
  • To collate appropriate statistical data in accordance with departmental procedure and to produce reports as requested to capture performance targets and clinical governance
  • To oversee the safe and appropriate use of Occupational Therapy equipment by staff and residents, through teaching, training and supervision of practice.

The role holder is expected to:

  • To participate in Dementia education for pensioners and staff, collaborating where necessary with internal and external health professionals
  • To be legally accountable for all aspects of own working including assessment, management of patients, equipment provision and documentation.
  • To develop working relationships across agencies to include NHS and Local Authorities therapy providers as appropriate
  • Under the direction of the Lead OT, critically review/audit current Occupational Therapy services and seek to identify opportunities to improve the service by providing the best patient care, within the resources available and with the support of the TherapyLead
  • To assume delegated tasks as requested by the therapy managers relevant to the delivery of the Occupational Therapy service. To contribute to service development and be innovative and proactive, working alongside Therapy Lead
  • To attend and contribute to any additional internal or external meetings representing Occupational Therapy and the therapy team as required.
  • To provide supervision and delegate tasks as appropriate to the Therapy Assistant and In Pensioners volunteering as a therapeutic role in the therapy department.
  • To escalate any concerns or safeguarding issues to the line manager or senior staff member as appropriate.

Qualifications:


  • Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Occupational Therapy
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Royal College of Occupational Therapists (RCOT)
Skills Knowledge and Experience

  • Sound clinical reasoning and treatment planning within your scope of practice

Provision of skilled patient centred intervention to meet the identified treatment goals and use established outcome measures to measure effectiveness of intervention.


  • To demonstrate evidencebased practice by implementing current and up to date research, philosophies, equipment and modalities
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with professional standards of practice and local policy
  • Ability to engage and motivate pensioners to engage in therapeutic activities Experience in carrying out a range of cognitive assessments
  • Clinical experience in working with adults living with cognitive impairment/dementia
  • Experience in working with the elderly
  • Experience of working in a variety of clinical settings
  • Ability to identify unmet needs of the service user and refer on as appropriate to other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Take part in relevant appraisal and revalidation processes.
