Description

St Catherine's is a small 10 bedded care home based in Lanark.

18 shifts over a 4 week rolling rota (6.75 hours per shift)

PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
To assist in the provision of care and support that enhances the life of each individual. To work as part of St Catherine's team to achieve required standards.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities

Care and Support


Ø To provide a high standard of person centred care, recognising the service user as an individual reflecting the philosophy of the Daughters of Charity and St Catherine's.

Ø To work as a team member and to support and assist fellow colleagues.


Ø To afford each service user at all times, due dignity and respect, facilitating opportunities for privacy, choice and independence.

Ø To assist the service user to maximise their full potential given their limitations of age e.g. the service users physical, intellectual, social and spiritual needs.


Ø To become familiar with and adhere to the planned care, support, rehabilitation or respite programme for each service user.


Ø To attend to the daily personal care of each service user as drawn up in their plan of care.


Ø To supervise and monitor the service users at regular intervals attending to individual needs with particular awareness of the personal safety of each one.


Ø To be alert to the changes in a service user's physical, emotional and psychological well being and to record and report to senior staff about such.

Ø To assist service users who need help during meal times (be aware of swallowing difficulties, dietary requirements etc). Assist with preparing and serving of food and drinks as requested / required. Wash up as requested / required.

Ø To answer the nurse call system, giving assistance as required. To answer the door and the telephone appropriately. To respond accordingly and pass on messages promptly.


Ø To carry out regular checks on service users throughout the day and night time as determined by senior staff members and in agreement with service users.

Ø To act as a key worker for a named service user under the guidance of the Registered Manager.


Ø To assist, engage and involve service user with activities, interest and hobbies as drawn up with the service users.

Ø To assist sensitively to the delivery of end of life care.

To ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and the bereaved, in line with St Catherine's policies and procedures.

Ø To carry out monthly review of service users care plans and making changes where necessary.

Ø To arrange and carry out six monthly review of service users care plan.

Ø To attend and contribute to ongoing reviews for service users


Operational
Ø To undertake as required housekeeping duties e.g. laundry, cleaning, catering, room management etc.


Ø To make and change beds, ensuring that rooms and en-suites are clean and tidy in keeping with the service users wishes.

Ø To clean and maintain equipment used by service users / relatives e.g. wheelchairs, hearing aids, zimmer frames spectacles etc.

Ø To ensure care for service users clothing is kept to quality standards - clean, laundered and labeled.

Ø To escort service users traveling e.g. on social outings, hospital visits, appointments etc.

Ø To ensure that all relevant St Catherine's policies and procedures and current legislation are understood and adhered to.


Ø To practice maximum integrity in all dealings with service users' personal and financial affairs, and avoid abuse of the privileged relationship that exists with service users.


Ø To ensure a safe and healthy environment is provided for all and to report anything to the contrary to Senior Management or to maintenance personnel.

Ø To ensure the compliance of a high level of infection control is maintained throughout the home.

Ø To ensure the compliance of a high level of fire safety is maintained throughout the home.


Ø To participate in and ensure the elements of Complaints, Risk, and Health and Safety are reflected in the care and services provided.

Ø To record and maintain all written records as required, reporting any concerns immediately to the person in charge.


Ø To observe care planning needs for service users and complete written daily records as instructed and in keeping with policies and procedures.

Ø To ensure visitors are made welcome. Provide refreshments/assistance as and when required.

Ø To undertake any other duties required by the Registered Manager and Director of Services.

Ø To ensure service users receive safe administration of medication in accordance with St Catherine's Medication Policy


Personnel


Ø To ensure that all information of confidential nature gained in the course of duty is not divulged to third parties.

Ø To ensure personal compliance with St. Catherine's Policies and Procedures and all Statutory Regulations required in care homes.
