Butler Rose is working on an exclusive basis to recruit a Payroll Officer for a highly successful business on the outskirts of Exeter.

This is a newly created role and has arisen due to business growth.


As a Payroll Officer, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring accurate and timely processing of staff salaries, statutory payments, and deductions through the payroll system.

Your mathematical acumen and attention to detail will be essential in verifying overtime hours and resolving various payroll queries. Working closely with HR, you will handle joiners, leavers, and amendments to maintain smooth payroll operations.

Supporting the Payroll Manager, your responsibilities in this Payroll Officer role will include:

  • Processing staff salaries, including salary sacrifice, in a timely manner.
  • Administering statutory payments in compliance with HMRC legislation (e.g., SSP, SMP, SPP).
  • Verifying overtime hours with appropriate management personnel before processing.
  • Collaborating with HR to handle payroll updates accurately and efficiently.
  • Handling statutory deductions such as Court Orders and Student Loans.
  • Liaising with external organisations like HMRC and Child Care Voucher providers for returns.
  • Preparing and submitting RTI reports to HMRC.
  • Assisting employees in resolving payroll queries and managing corrections.
  • Processing staff expense claims following authorisation.
  • Assisting in payroll transitions and acquisitions, including setting up payroll, P11Ds, PSAs, CIS, and Pension schemes.
  • Preparing and distributing payroll reports to management and relevant departments.

To be considered for this Payroll Officer role you will have:

  • Previous experience as a Payroll Officer, Payroll Clerk, or in a similar role.
  • Detailed knowledge of UK legislation as it applies to payroll processes.
  • IT literacy with proficiency in Excel.
