Description
To provide day-to-day supervision of the BSU, ensuring legal compliance and best practice

  • To act as the Names Person Responsible for Animal Care and Welfare (NACWO), demonstrating a full and up to date working knowledge of Animal Scientific Procedures Act 1986 and EU Directive (ASPA)
  • To also act as Named Training and Competency officer (NTCO) and Named Information Officer (NIO)
  • To provide expert advice and prepare the necessary animals for research and training, for the presurgery and postsurgery periods
  • To work closely with the Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) and plan their visits.
  • Ensure facilities are maintained within the confines of the relevant legislation and budgetary constraints
  • To prepare necessary animals for research and training, manage recovery and keep animals in good condition during the pre
- and post-surgery periods

  • To organise husbandry staff to ensure that work requirements are met and liaise with leads and sponsors to plan experimental programmes to ensure requirements are met, including organisation and allocation of staff (in liaison with the Theatre and Resourcing Manager)
  • Holder of Home Office personal licence for the species they are caring for.
  • Attendance at Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Board (AWERB) to offer advice on animal welfare
  • Provide the lead on all aspects of research conducted in the BSU to staff
  • Must foster strong customer focus and relationships throughout the team, ensuring:
  • The facilities are maintained at a high standard to meet customer needs and meeting Home Office guidelines.
  • Work is conducted as efficiently as possible, with animal welfare being a major consideration.
  • Strict management of biosecurity
  • Liaise with Biological Services' customers to allow for the undertaking and planning of current and future workloads.
  • To advise and assist users of the facilities in planning of their projects involving laboratory animals promoting 'best practice'
  • To ensure the provision of appropriate equipment within the facility including sourcing and purchasing
  • Maintain an awareness of changes in the law and their impact on the facility and its service provision.
  • To participate in delivery of training in the following ways:
  • Provide induction and refreshers for staff and users of the facility
  • Delivery training for experimental techniques; ensuring all BSU users are regularly examined and signed off to show competency, in line with Biological Services' policies in meeting the needs of A(SP)A
  • To work with the Study director lead in maintenance of training and competency records for staff and facility users, as required
  • To take part in joint Biological Services activities, ensuring that the facility operates to the policies and ethos of the Griffin Institute
  • To work alongside the Theatre Resources manager to cost all purchases made by researchers and/or tenants for animals, facility charges and related consumables. Recharging as necessary for cost recovery
  • Authorising invoices and maintaining filing systems for all orders, animals and consumables purchased
  • Willing to attend NTCO and NIO courses and hold Named responsibilities
