Closing date: 5th February 2023
The ATLAS Detector at CERN, Geneva, is an experiment which is delivering particle physics discoveries. It is set to undergo extensive upgrades through installation of novel subsystems.

Production of some of these systems is to take place at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, elsewhere in the UK, and worldwide over the coming years, requiring multiple steps of mechanical and electronic integration of parts into larger assemblies.

STFC RAL has taken on roles across the full spectrum of assembly steps within the strip detector and pixel detector subprojects, typically involving adhesive-based precision assembly.

All steps of the assembly are usually followed by a step of electronicinterconnection by means of wire bonding and subsequent testing.

As we ramp up into production, we are seeking two enthusiastic individuals to join the team, based at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, delivering this project.

Experience of working with laboratory equipment and/or in a cleanroom environment would beuseful but not essential, as training will be provided for all steps of the process.

A willingness to learn new skills and good fine motor skills are essential.

As a member of the project delivery team, you will be expected to contribute to the build of detector assemblies, including:

  • Precision placement
  • Dimensional metrology
  • Forming electronic connections
  • Electronic testing
  • Quality control
  • Production recordkeeping

There will also be opportunities to travel to expose your work and to learn from others in the wider collaboration.

Essentials

  • Good mechanical and fine motor skills to perform precision assembly tasks, including prolonged periods of working under a microscope
  • Willingness to learn new skills, e.g. electronic integration, programming
  • Willingness to work with adhesives and chemicals
  • Ability to work in a cleanroom
  • Sense of ownership of your work

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience working in a cleanroom or laboratory environment
  • Prior experience of working with microscopes
  • Ability to travel

What we can offer you
STFC values their employees by offering a benefits package designed to provide an excellent work/life balance including:

  • 30 days holiday (in addition to bank holidays and privilege days).
  • Flexible working hours.
  • An excellent defined average salary pension scheme.
  • Employee shopping/travel discounts.
  • Excellent learning and development opportunities.
