The School
Founded in 1915, St Christopher School is an independent day and boarding school for girls and boys aged 3-18. We have 535 pupils and 199 teaching and support staff. We have no school uniform and everyone is called by their first name. We have no religious affiliation and welcome students and staff of all faiths and none.

Job Outline:


The Pastoral Assistant plays a prominent role in delivering outstanding pastoral care at St Chris, being based in the centre of school and fronting the Pastoral Office.


Main Purpose


Working alongside the Heads of Year and the Director of Pastoral Care, the Pastoral Assistant plays a key part in ensuring the effectiveness of the day to day pastoral care at St Chris - and therefore to the happiness, confidence, and wellbeing, of each child in the senior school.


The role has many facets, with significant administration responsibilities, but perhaps the most important aspect is the requirement for considerable skill in liaison with parents, pupils, teachers and Heads of Year.

The Pastoral Assistant will frequently be the person filtering information and tackling situations as they arise, be it missing PE kit or missing children from lessons A calm head and the ability to communicate clearly and confidently are essential.


Specific Duties
Specific responsibilities are many and varied, and will alter as the term progresses, but will include:


  • Room 12 Cover: to ensure that Room 12 is covered during the School day
  • arranging temporary cover where necessary

Contact: the main point of contact for parents, children and staff.

Pastoral care: knowing the children and their families, and providing a reassuring and friendly face, often at times of anxiety, being sensitive to changes in pupil behaviour/demeanour, referring issues on to the Adviser/Head of Year/Director of Pastoral Care as appropriate.


Attendance / registration:


  • To chase any N's that we are unaware of.
  • Check 'lates' for the day and liaise with Company Adviser/Personal Tutor to ensure this is followed up.
  • Call parents for those absences we are unsure about.
  • Ensure the Room 12 signing in and out sheet is up to date.
  • For Period 4 Registration (13:40 13:55) ensure any N's are changed to preloaded code if they have been overridden and cross reference if the student has been in School but now appears not to be.
  • Monitor students flagged up by Head of Year/Senior Pastoral Lead who are missing lessons or are persistently late; and reporting to Head of Year/Senior Pastoral Lead to follow up.
  • Input counselling appointments into ISAMs

Illness: first aid, liaison with parents, children and with the School Nurse as appropriate.

Appointments: assisting pupils with attendance at Music lessons and Counselling appointments, and any other lessons or appointments that pupils may have. Overseeing SLT interview appointments for Yr11, assisting with voting at the Major Official elections each year.

Bus Service: supervision of the bus service with SLT at 3:50 each day as well as assisting with unforeseen issues arising.

Bus fobs: create replacement bus fob, liaising with finance of the charge when more than two fobs have been issued.

Point of Contact Bus Company: To act as first point of contact for the external bus provider

  • General administration: updating the weekly Lunch Patrol Boards, supporting the administration of the behavioural policy, general photocopying/printing as may be required.

Pupils' property: organising individual lockers and holding a list plus spare keys as appropriate, receiving and sorting out all lost property, including liaison with pupils and parents over missing valuables.

Parent Consultations: arranging for the efficient running of the Parent Consultations, including logistics and attendance by the Major Officials.

Meetings: attendance at the termly pastoral meeting, as well as required First Aid and Child Protection training. Any other meetings as reasonably requested.

Examinations: collate Study Leave permission, liaison with Exams officer about invigilation plus emergency contact via Pastoral office.

Events: assistance with the smooth running of weekend/after school events such as Open/Assessment Mornings, Summer Fair etc. (approx. 10 evenings and 2 Saturdays per year).

Missing Children: Search for missing children reporting back to the appropriate teacher/ company advisor and Head of Year

  • When appropriate collect pupils as requested by the Head of Year, Pastoral lead, Perris, and the School's counsellor

Other tasks: Distribute work/ PE kits that are handed in


Hours of Work
Monday to Friday 08:00 - 16:30 with half hour unpaid lunch,
