Job Purpose

To make a substantial and positive contribution to the strategic direction of the School/College through leading and contributing to research of international standard within the Materials and Condensed Matter Physics research group, high quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, securing research funding, and providing academic leadership and management within the School/College.

To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach. At Grade 8 and 9, demonstrate leadership and contribute to academic and strategic management.

For appointment at Reader you will have an outstanding track record of national and international distinction and leadership in research, including publications, income, and awards, bringing external recognition and distinction to yourself and the University.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

Perform the following range of activities:

  • Undertake a leading role in the development and implementation of individual and/or joint research projects of international standard, participating actively in the development of College/School research strategy.
  • Act as principal investigator or project leader on major research projects with a portfolio of research activity and publications of high quality and impact.

Create and develop effective networks with students, staff across the University, and external stakeholders to oversee the embedding of key University priorities such as graduate attributes, professional requirements, work-related learning, transitions support, student mobility and quality enhancement within credit bearing and non-credit bearing activities.

  • Develop a strategic approach to embedding learning technologies across the Subject/School and College to support and enhance course/programme delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment within campus based, blended and online provision.
  • Lead the development of inclusive and innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that recognise the needs of a diverse student cohort, taking appropriate responsibility for managing associated cultural changes and staff support and development.
  • Through an established network of external stakeholders, increasingly influence public understanding and/or professional policy and practice aligned with the strategic priorities of the School/College/University.
  • Supervise individual student projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate level to ensure their effective development and assisting with difficulties e.g. learning support/problems.
  • Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.
  • To contribute to the enhancement of the University's international profile in line with the University's Strategic Plan, World Changers Together

For appointment at Grade 9:


  • Demonstrate a distinctive contribution to the academic community through a leading role nationally and internationally eg shaping research agendas, advising review panels and funders

Namely:
-17. To interact with national and international Research Councils and similar bodies at an appropriate level, and engage, as appropriate, in the dissemination of advanced research through commercialisation, technology transfer, outreach etc.


For appointment at Reader:


  • Excel significantly in generation of research, outputs, funding, supervision, and knowledge exchange/impact.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential:
A2 Significant breadth/depth of knowledge in gravitational wave data analysis and astrophysics.

A3 A growing international reputation, evidenced by esteem indicators, in a field that matches or enhances existing activities within the MCMP Group.


For appointment at Grade 9/Reader:

A4 An extensive and established international reputation in research and/or teaching within Materials Physics.


Skills

Essential:
C1 Recognised expertise in materials physics to allow development of new knowledge and understanding within the field.
C2 Sustained engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.

C3 Engagement with the current and future priorities and the aims and ambitions of the Materials and Condensed Matter Physics group and the University/College/Service strategies.

C4 Ability to plan and lead staff and efficiently deploy resources in support of major research and teaching activities.
C5 Ability to disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences to promote understanding.
C6 Ability to undertake academic leadership of groups/activities with substantial impact on finance and other resources.
C7 Ability to forge new and effective relationships with colleagues, internally and externally, to foster collaboration across the University and with colleagues in other institut
