Assistant Psychologist in Paediatric Neuro-developmental Service - 12 months Fixed Term

We are seeking an assistant psychologist who is passionate about identifying, understanding and meeting the needs of children with a potential underlying neuro-developmental presentation.


This post will be part of the Neuro-developmental Team in the Paediatric Psychology Service, which supports the well-being of children and young people up to the age of 18.

The Paediatric Neuro-developmental Psychology Team work alongside other health professionals such as Paediatricians, Speech and Language Therapists, and Clinical Nurse Specialists offering assessments and interventions.


A key aspect of this role is to provide psychological assessments and interventions with children within the Under 5 Neuro-developmental Pathway and support the Clinical Psychologist and wider multidisciplinary team in the Under 5 Neuro-developmental service.

There is an active and supportive group of Assistant Psychologists within Child Psychology and the wider health board.

You will have access to clinical supervision with a qualified Clinical Psychologist and opportunities for professional development within your role.

We also enjoy close relationships with the Cardiff Clinical Doctorate Course.

Main Duties


The post holder will be expected to develop strong working relationships with their colleagues within the Children's Centres (particularly, Children's Centre Psychologists, AHP's and Consultant Paediatricians) and participate fully in the professional activities of the Child and Family Psychology Specialty and the Gwent Psychology Service.

This new post will be based within our 0-5 Neuro-developmental Services, and the main roles will include:

  • Supporting the provision of high quality formulative (and diagnostic, where appropriate) interpretations of a child's developmental and psychological needs.
  • Contributing to service design, development, audit, and research.
  • Involvement in multi-disciplinary consultation and joint working with staff who are connected to the Neuro-developmental Service pathway
  • Supporting the delivery of high-quality training and development sessions on child development to psychologists and staff of other disciplines.


The post holder will also be able to contribute to the development of new psychological services to meet the needs of children and young people presenting with Neuro-developmental needs and participate in service planning as appropriate.
