The post-holder will act as an expert clinical resource and co-ordinate all nursing education and training within the medicine ward areas and coronary care unit.

Ensure care is delivered within a clinical governance framework to create an environment in which excellence in clinical care flourishes.

The post holder will ensure that the standard of education and training provided is conducive to the requirements of the service and in line with the Trust's strategy of excellent, safe and compassionate care every day for every patient.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES ̈ CLINICAL ̈ To organise and facilitate with the ward managers the induction and preceptorship of all staff bands into the surgical wards.

̈ In conjunction with clinical / management leads ensure that agreed patient management plans and standards of care are implemented, evaluated and adhered to, thus providing high standards of care at all times. ̈ Actively promote the Trust wide strategy for Risk Management ̈ Identify, maintain and improve the quality of patient care through the facilitation of best practice and clinical benchmarking. ̈ Actively participate in standard setting and development and maintenance of protocols and procedures required within the medicine division,. ̈ Ensure nursing staff are competent in the use of equipment, adhere to Department policies regarding the cleaning, and repair of any faulty equipment.

̈ MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP ̈ Participate in the recruitment of Departmental staff when required. ̈ Maintain an awareness of the staffing establishment requirements for the medicine division ̈ Aid recruitment and retention within the division by ensuring a robust communication strategy is in place with regard to information on courses / study days etc. ̈ Work closely with practice educator peers in other divisions/specialities within the Trust & work to ensure standardisation of educational and clinical practice across the Trust. ̈ Work in a clinical capacity with identified nursing staff and students to develop practical skills and link theory to practice.

̈ At all times display a corporate image and an attitude that motivates staff. ̈ Manage the placements of pre and post registration students and maintain a current register of mentors. ̈ Demonstrate a commitment to the Improving Working Lives Agenda, treating all staff fairly and with equity. ̈ Assist in the maintenance of a database of staff qualifications, study leave; progress reports etc ensuring yearly compulsory updates (drug assessments, manual handling, and fire) are maintained.

̈ In conjunction with clinical staff develop a positive learning environment for all staff. ̈ Act as a role model and make managerial decisions when appropriate to support junior staff in decision making. ̈ Actively facilitate staff development by ensuring staff receive effective preceptorship. ̈ Facilitate support to the Multidisciplinary Team in relation to practice development.

̈ Ability to respond dynamically to the unpredictability of workload and service demands. ̈ To investigate incidents and where appropriate ensure learning is identified and shared. ̈ ORGANISATIONAL ̈ To provide clinical care taking the opportunity to lead and teach by example in the clinical setting. ̈ To act as a clinical expert leading best practice and professionalism.

̈ To identify and manage a comprehensive teaching programme which is flexible and adaptable to the needs of all grades of staff and student nurses. ̈ In collaboration with the management team identify the individual learning needs of all staff through personal development plans / competency pyramid/talent mapping process. ̈ Encourage reflective practice including ongoing development. ̈ To maintain and improve own knowledge base by attending appropriate courses and undertaking research-based projects.

̈ EDUCATIONAL and TRAINING ̈ To provide clinical care taking the opportunity to lead and teach by example in the clinical setting. ̈ To act as a clinical expert leading best practice and professionalism. ̈ To identify and manage a comprehensive teaching programme which is flexible and adaptable to the needs of all grades of staff and student nurses. ̈ In collaboration with the management team identify the individual learning needs of all staff through personal development plans / appraisal systems.

̈ Participate in and facilitate innovations in collaboration with the MDT and product representatives. ̈ Regularly undertake formal teaching sessions on post-registration pathways related to the clinical speciality internally and externally. ̈ Liaise with other disciplines to facilitate and promote local study days. ̈ To establish and maintain an active learning environment in all aspects of the cardio thoracic surgery ensuring all staff members fully participate in delivery of educational lectures.
