Job Purpose:


The role will focus on the delivery and technical project management of a range of forensic investigations related to the condition assessments and failure analysis of power systems plant, in particular switchgear and cable systems.


Overview of Main Responsibilities:

  • The role will also involve providing technical advice and knowledge sharing to assist other team members with technical aspects of investigation projects.
  • Drive continuous improvements across the Power Forensics proposition set through opportunity identification, sharing best practice and learning.
  • Condition assessment of paper and polymeric cable systems for voids, discharge activity, inclusions, oxidation, electrical trees / water trees, residual mechanical stresses, etc.
  • Failure investigations / condition assessments of cable joints, comprising a wide array of paper / polymeric cable systems and configurations.
  • Failure investigations / condition assessments of Oil filled, SF6 filled and Vacuum MV circuit breakers.
  • Failure investigations / condition assessments of LV air insulated circuit breakers and investigations of systems they are used on, eg motor starter systems.
  • The role will involve aspects of the day to day running of the projects hall and materials lab. This may include o Updating of SOPs, RA's and COSHH information o Assisting in the laboratory improvement plan o Ensuring the calibration of instruments are up to date o Ensuring work areas are clean and tidy and samples are stored or disposed of correctly
  • The role will involve working with the other team members in Forensic Investigations and across the wider Analytical team to ensure quality delivery for the customer.
  • The role will involve operating within the company procedures and policies.
  • The role will involve operating in accordance with health and safety requirements.
Essential skills and experience

  • To be able to scope out a technical investigation to be able to condition assess or establish the root cause of failure or degree of ageing of different pieces of power systems plant.
  • To be able to lead and develop relationships with the clients.
  • Be proficient in the writing of technical reports and appraising findings from technical investigations.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and to manage own time and deliverables whilst working on multiple projects.
  • To be able to maintain a consistent and high standard of the analysis to ensure a like for like comparisons of materials can be made between different investigations.
  • PC Skills in the use of Microsoft Word and Excel
Knowledge

  • To have a comprehensive technical understanding of o Power systems plant and its operation
  • The value of the investigation to the customer and understand the reasons why we are performing the investigations.
  • The design and construction of specific power systems plant, such as cables, switchgear, etc.
  • An understanding of the electrical field distributions in power plant and methods used to control electrical field distributions
  • An understanding of common failure mode of power systems plant
  • An understanding of partial discharge and its significance in the ageing and failure of cable systems.
  • An understanding of how to separate the observations following failure from the root cause.
  • Being able to identify risks in the handling and processing of chemicals and materials and how best to mitigate the risks through Ras.
  • Desired knowledge of high voltage testing.
