Description

The Vaccine Innovation Pathway for clinical trials is a programme of work focused on streamlining study set up and delivery processes for mRNA vaccine clinical trials for infectious diseases and cancer.

This is building on the learnings from the pandemic to improve how vaccine research is delivered in the NHS and care system and to make the UK the best global destination for infectious disease and cancer vaccine clinical trials.


Job Purpose


As Head of the Vaccine Innovation Pathway Programme Management Office, this role will collaborate with stakeholders in the health research ecosystem and industry to drive the design and implementation of new processes to streamline the setup and delivery of new vaccine trials across the UK clinical research system.

You will also be responsible for ensuring that industrial partners receive regular updates on the progress of their clinical trial portfolio by managing dedicated Key Account Managers.

The Programme Management Office will lead and support business process redesign to create a Vaccine Innovation Pathway for clinical trials, including:

  • Designing a collaborative approach with pharmaceutical / biotech companies to ensure early sight of a portfolio of vaccine studies, in order to ensure best fit with UK population and therefore enable greater contribution from UK sites;
  • Enhancing and supporting processes to engage an increasing community of investigators through the formation of two UK Vaccines Research Fora, and developing activities to incorporate the members' expertise to optimise successful delivery of a growing portfolio of vaccine studies;
  • Developing arrangements to ensure optimal placement of the portfolio of studies, via UK systems, including supporting collaborative planning and identifying resource requirements of UK regions and their participating clinical trial sites;
  • Incorporating engagement with a range of organisations to build in plans for advancing the utilisation of a range of consenttocontact registries (national and local), data enable recruitment opportunities, and linking with plans to increase public awareness of vaccine research activities and associated diseases.
You will work to design and monitor a robust programme of work.

You will work closely with key stakeholders including clinical leaders and senior management from the NIHR Clinical Research Facilities, NIHR Clinical Research Network (and the successor NIHR Research Delivery Network), and where required with policy leads at the Department for Health and Social Care, Office for Life Science and the UK Health Security Agency and also work with senior leaders at partner companies.


Key responsibilities

Strategy Development and Implementation:Work with clinical leaders to co-develop a vision, strategy and implementation plans for the Vaccine Innovation Pathway. Provide national strategic leadership for and management of the ongoing evolution of the Pathway. Ensure strategic objectives are delivered and reported to stakeholders. Ensure robust governance arrangements are in place including managing risks. Engage and involve key stakeholder groups that are important to the successful implementation of the vision and strategy.

Driving Innovation:Manage the development of projects in order to deliver elements of the Vaccine Innovation Pathway


Current priority areas include:

  • Leading the formation of the UK Infectious Diseases Vaccines Research Forum and UK Cancer Vaccines Research Forum
  • Redesigning established processes to ensure proactive planning for a portfolio of large scale vaccine studies, including collaborative input into placement of individual studies to enable successful delivery of the whole portfolio, linking with clinical expertise and guidance from the two forums.
  • Designing and delivering a process for investing in process and resource improvement projects for participating clinical trial sites across the UK, funded by a Vaccine Innovation Fund.
  • Engaging UK population to support willingness to participate in studies and to remain involved until study completion.

Team Leadership and Support: Provide management for a team of up 10 staff, with direct line management of some team members. Ensure a productive and motivated team while delivering a fast paced and busy workload. Support efficient ways of working whilst maintaining attention to detail and delivery to deadlines. Maintain a strong team spirit and support opportunities for learning and professional development as required.


Qualifications


To be successful in this role, you will have strong leadership and influencing skills, with the ability to identify, sequence and monitor a range of activities forming a coherent programme of delivery.
