Context for the role

The M&G plc Risk and Compliance function:

  • Assists the Board to formulate, implement and monitor adherence to the Risk Appetite and Limit framework, risk management plans, risk policies, risk reporting and risk identification processes;
  • Provides guidance, tools and technology and reviews and assesses the risk taking activities of, the first line of defence, where appropriate challenging the actions being taken to manage and control risks; and,
  • Provides the Board with an aggregate view of M&G plc's risk profile and supports them in identifying and assessing key and emerging risks which threaten the achievement of M&G plc's objectives.
The Enterprise Risk Management function operates across the insurance and asset management businesses, and M&G plc Group.

It maintains the overall Risk Management Framework and is responsible for a range of enterprise-wide risk management processes, reporting into Board, Board Committees, Executive Committees and sub-committees thereof.

Key accountabilities

  • To work collaboratively with colleagues and take personal accountability to maintain and enhance controls you are responsible for to support improvement of the overall control environment, customers outcomes and a reduction in M&G Prudential's operational risk.
  • To lead the development and maintenance of the Risk Management Framework, including risk policies and standards, and report on the attestation against policy requirements in line with the Group Governance Framework for the Solvency II elements.
  • To lead the implementation of Solvency II Pillar 2 processes for which the team is responsible.
  • To lead the coordination and production of regulatory disclosures, including ORSA, Solvency and Financial Condition Reports and Regular Supervisory Reports.
  • To advise Finance on content relating to risks and uncertainties in the annual report and accounts of the Company's legal entities.
  • This is a people manager role with line management responsibilities for a team of 3 actuaries
Key knowledge, skills and experience

  • Detailed knowledge of Industry best practices and good network/links with individuals and external bodies desirable.
  • Detailed knowledge of financial services regulatory and legislatory frameworks, including Solvency II, desirable.
  • Detailed knowledge of Life, Pensions and Investment products, markets and competitors essential.
  • Detailed knowledge of risk methodologies and frameworks essential.
  • Detailed knowledge of M&G plc products, systems and distribution methods desirable.
  • Actuarial or financial risk experience essential.
  • Significant experience in liaising, influencing and negotiating effectively with internal parties and external parties essential.
  • Significant experience in providing input on regulatory/business developments desirable.
  • Experience in ICAAP and ORSA essential.
  • Experience in Risk Identification bottomup, top risks and emerging risks essential.
  • Experience in developing Risk Management Frameworks policies, standards, appetite statements/limits essential.
  • Experience in taking broad spectrum data and presenting to senior management in an effective way essential.
  • Experience in asset management and insurance markets, and how regulations are applied essential.
  • A promoter of Regulatory Risk & Compliance awareness within the organisation desirable.
  • Able to work collaboratively across the immediate team and broader Risk and Compliance function while also being able to work independently and take ownership for an area of expertise.
  • Able to think about the best outcome for our stakeholders.
  • Ability to make connections between Compliance, Financial, Enterprise, and Operational risk areas and work with others to mitigate risks in accordance with business requirements.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills as well as Big Picture thinking.
  • Able to look beyond face value, ask the right questions and make links and connections across the organisation.
  • Strong investigative skills and ability to constructively challenge.
