The Newt in Somerset is a country estate with ancient woodland, historic gardens and far-reaching views, a new and unique destination with luxury hotel, spa, restaurants and an abundance of home-grown produce.

Visitors can take a tour of the gardens, deer park and cyder press, dine in the Garden Café or browse our farm shops.

Attracting some 200,000 visitors per year from all over the world, our vibrant and thriving garden attraction is animated throughout the seasons by special events, workshops and educational programmes.


Department Description

The HR department is at the heart of the business and the HR team are committed to ensuring that the Newt is a great place to work through people centric concepts that support the overall business goals.

We manage a varied team across the estate from our gardeners to our our spa therapists to our farmers.

We offer support with tailored recruitment, experience and development programmes and opportunities for engagement and reward.

We constantly evolve what we do to fit with our ever-changing environment, whilst recognising all of the wonderful people that bring 'Team Newt' to life.


Position Summary


This is an exciting opportunity to join a passionate and forward thinking HR Team that work at the heart of supporting and developing an ever evolving workforce.

You should be passionate about HR & Learning and development and be looking for an active and high profile HR Role with lots of opportunity to grow and develop both your HR, Training & Development and Facilitation skills.

This role is not about being sat behind a desk.

Our HR Team ethos is to be out and about with our teams, being on hand to support colleagues and managers at every turn.

You will be balancing the administration and co-ordination of our end to end HR Processes as well as being the face of our Staff engagement initiatives and delivery of our Estate Induction.


What will you get up to?

  • Assisting and advising employees and managers with general HR queries.
  • Manage and coordinate all administration tasks within the department such as induction, recruitment and selection, new starters, probations, leavers, employment changes, absence related documentation, training workshops and record keeping.
  • Delivering our estate induction programmes to all our new employees.
  • Coordinating and administration our Estate Uniform portal.
  • Monitoring attendance and recording absence, as well as providing reports for management meetings as required
  • Work closely with HR Manager on the Training and Development needs for the estate; investigating training course solutions, supporting managers with booking of training courses and management of training agreements.
  • Liaising with managers on their future training requirements including supporting and coordinating our internal Management Development Programme.
  • Overseeing and organising all of our employee engagement initiatives and HR led events, programmes and courses.
  • Collaborating with the HR Recruitment Coordinator on employee reward scheme, work experience weeks and university placement programmes.
  • Being an ambassador for The Newt, representing and recruiting at external industry and careers events.
  • Management of systems and ensuring all records are up to date on the online training platform and processing purchase orders on SAGE.
  • Responsible for internal communications to our employees utilising all different communications mediums, such as Social Media

What we need from our HR & Training Coordinator

  • You will be a people person and a team player, and someone who is organised, able to prioritise their own workload and has an eye for detail.
  • You will be selfmotivated, proactive, able to multitask and used to working in a pressurised environment.
  • You will be confident in standing up and delivering our Estate Induction to our teams and taking the lead in our staff engagement initiatives.
  • You will be comfortable being out and about on the estate, talking to our colleagues and senior management and really becoming a friendly face of HR to all.
  • You will be a "can do" person who is always looking at ways to support and improve what we do.
  • You will love variety and no day ever being the same
  • You'll be highly proficient in Microsoft suite and a quick learner for new systems.
  • Previous experience in similar HR role with a passion for learning & development
  • You will have at CIPD Level 3 in HR or Learning and Development
  • Employment Law Knowledge and experience of dealing with HR Employee relation issues is desirable
