We are excited to offer an opportunity to join the Speech and Language Therapy team in Inpatient Adult Mental Health Services.

You will be supported and line managed by a Highly Specialist SLT, also based in AMH.


You will be contributing to multi-disciplinary diagnostic assessments as well as carrying out individual SLT assessments and interventions, providing a service for individuals, their partners and their families.

You will be responsible for contributing to the identification of speech, language and communication needs, through understanding neurodevelopmental communication differences, and highlighting communication risks and reasonable adjustments when formulating as a team and considering risk management.

You will contribute directly to offering bespoke therapeutic interventions, through a positive behavioural support framework and working directly with service users, the MDT and partners to plan a safe discharge to community services.


You will also be a part of the highly respected, passionate and quality focused Speech and Language Therapy Service for IDD and Mental Health in Nottinghamshire, with many opportunities for peer support.

You will enjoy close links with our wider team and our SLT colleagues within the East Midlands, and benefit from excellent levels of support, supervision, and CPD opportunities.


The role requires a high level of clinical and professional expertise in order that adults with mental health conditions and associated speech, language and communication needs can benefit from a well co-ordinated pro-active, specialist, efficient and effective speech and language therapy service within inpatient settings.


You will be involved in making the patients' care and support accessible to support their engagement in their care, treatment and theraputic interventions.

You will help develop the AMH Inpatient workforce's skills in understanding dysphagia needs and provide support regarding dysphagia where possible.

The service includes individual assessment, therapy and management, training, advice and liaison through a consultative approach.

You must hold a relevant degree in Speech and Language Therapy and be registered with RCSLT and HCPC.

Your focus will be on communication and safe and healthy eating and drinking (dysphagia) recognising the link between unmet communication needs and mental health problems:

Specialist speech, language, and communication assessments focusing on functional communication and what reasonable adjustments (Accessible Information Standards) should be in place to support the person's needs and reduce risks associated with their identified communication needs.


Liaison, advice and recommendations that aim to prevent further communication breakdown and that empower the individual to express their thoughts and opinions to support them to meaningfully engage in interventions regarding their mental health.

You will work in an interactive and a consultative way.


Co-working with your MDT colleagues, families, and carers to enable their inclusive communication practices in their relationships, care, and interactions with the individual.

You will support junior members of the team to implement SLT management plans/project work and help deliver supervision opportunities.


Attendance at ward based and directory wide meetings with and on behalf of the patient and your SLT team to plan for ongoing and accessible care.
