Accommodation Assistant Apprentice

£10,158.72 per annum

Fixed Term Contract for up to 18 months
We are seeking an Apprentice to work in our Housing Services Team. The Housing Team gives advice and assistance to people who are homeless or who are threatened with homelessness.

With support from the team, you will be working closely with homeless people, helping them to be safe and happy in temporary accommodation.

The role will involve providing hands-on support to the Housing Team, particularly around the temporary accommodation that is provided to homeless people.

Temporary accommodation is a flat, house or room provided by the council to a homeless person or family, for a short time while the Housing Team helps them move onto a more secure home.

It is sometimes called emergency housing.

You will be helping vulnerable people from all walks of life, which may include the very elderly, whole families or a young person that has left foster care.

This means that the job will be different every day, which makes it both challenging and varied - from arranging to have a lightbulb changed in someone's home to helping to re-home a whole family.

One thing for sure - you will always be learning, and the work is never boring

You won't be left on your own and you won't ever be put in a risky situation, as you will always have support from the Housing Team who will be there to help you.

Throughout the apprenticeship we will encourage you to think independently, to come up with practical solutions to everyday problems that our residents encounter.

With our full support, you will develop a high level of communication skills, learning how to adapt your communication style to meet the resident's levels of understanding and you will learn all about different housing problems and how to deal with them.

Your day to day responsibilities will include:

  • Helping people move into their temporary accommodation, ensuring they sign their license agreement and helping them complete forms for things like Housing Benefit and Council Tax.
  • Being the first point of call if someone has a problem in their temporary accommodation, for example if something is faulty, then it will be your job to arrange a plumber or an electrician.
  • Providing practical support to people in new accommodation by helping them if they are struggling, for example helping them to book doctors' appointments or arranging a food parcel.
  • Signing people out of their temporary property at the end of their stay, this includes checking that everything is in order and completing forms with them.
  • Informing people about their rights and responsibilities in temporary accommodation.
  • Working with the Housing Services Team to help people complete the paperwork required to enable them move into a more permanent home in the future.
  • Being a friendly face for people in a difficult situation. Everyone needs to see a friendly face sometimes.

The above is not an exhaustive list of duties and you will be expected to perform different tasks as necessitated by your changing role within the organisation and the overall business objectives of the organisation.

The Benefits:

  • Offthejob training provided with a CIH Certificate on successful completion of apprenticeship
  • 24 Days plus bank holidays and 1 additional day at Christmas
  • Employee Flexible working hours
  • Employee Assistance Programme (health & wellbeing support)
  • Reduced Leisure Membership fees for Council Owned facilities
  • Internal Learning and development opportunities
  • Career development and progression opportunities
  • Local Government Pension scheme
  • A dedicated mentor in the Housing Team
  • Hybrid Working
