Higher Level Teaching Assistants for Specialist School


Smart Education is delighted to partner with an independent specialist school that delivers exceptional, therapeutic, and child-centred education to boys and girls aged 6 to 17 in Tipton, West Midlands.

The students come from diverse backgrounds, all with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health needs (SEMH). Many of them also have other Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties. These children have often experienced significant trauma and adverse childhood experiences, with some having social care involvement.

At the school, they tackle a range of unique and challenging tasks. As a trauma and attachment informed organisation, the school provide extensive therapeutic training and support to all their staff.

The school adopt a closely triangulated approach that places the child at the heart of decision-making. This ensures collaboration between education and therapy professionals, parents/carers, local authority teams, and, most importantly, our students. Together, we strive to achieve outstanding outcomes for all.


The Role
The Higher-Level Teaching Assistants understand that each day brings new experiences, just as each child is different. They are compassionate adults who can support children with complex and challenging behaviours.


They understand the importance of giving these children focused attention, employing effective communication, maintaining consistency and flexibility, and offering a non-judgmental approach.

The Higher-Level Teaching Assistants need to be resilient, persistent, and solution-focused in order to meet the needs of the children.

They are prepared to wear multiple hats and adapt quickly to any situation.

As a Higher-Level Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities may include: - Assisting teachers in the classroom - Working with children one-on-one or leading sessions with small groups of students - Managing classroom resources - Accompanying children on trips and visits - Engaging socially with children who struggle in that area during lunchtime - Managing challenging behaviours and ensuring children's safety - Participating in board games and activities - Conducting science experiments - Creating impressive displays - Celebrating successes - Participating in therapy sessions or reflecting on difficult periods

Qualifications Required:6+ Months minimum experience. NVQ Level 3 + _
experience working with SEMH is essential._

£19,500 - £21,500 per annum (NOT Pro-rata)
