Overview

Bangor University, firmly rooted in the beautiful location of North Wales, was established in 1884. The university leadership has a strong focus on contributing to a sustainable world for future generations.

The College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering represents one of the largest concentrations of interdisciplinary environmental and natural resource scientists in UK universities.

The College has over 2300 students and 350 teaching and support staff and consists of three academic schools and the BioComposites Centre.

The School of Natural Science (SNS) within this College has a world-class reputation in research and teaching.

We have particular expertise in:

Conservation Science; Animal Behaviour Ecology and Physiology; Forestry; Evolution, Development, and Molecular Biology; Biogeochemistry of Soils, Wetlands, and Marine Environments; Agriculture, Food, and the Environment.

We are highly focused on conducting research which contributes to addressing the nature and climate emergencies through our policy-relevant research and strong pathways to impact via our global networks.

The Project

The School provides important facilities with high relevance for our research and teaching in zoology: The Natural History Museum with its comprehensive collection of vertebrate and invertebrate material, extensive freshwater and marine aquaria, animal holding facilities, and newly refurbished teaching laboratories.

The University also supports teaching and research via the Treborth Botanic Gardens and the Henfaes Research Centre.

The University's botanic garden at Treborth was founded more than 50 years ago and is home to a pigeon loft to enable studies on flight energetics and navigation.

The University's research farm at Henfaes totals 252 hectares.

It is unique in that its land goes from the sea to amongst the highest mountains in Wales, giving great diversity of habitats, land uses, climates, and geology on one farm.

More recently it has been used to house alpacas and Zwartbles sheep offering internships and dissertation opportunities specific to animal management.

We make the most of our natural environment and offer a range of local field trip opportunities, as well as offer overseas field course options to Florida, India, Spain and Uganda.
