Case Handler (Airworthiness)

The Role:


The Air Safety Unit's (ASU) primary function is to manage the UK Air Safety List (ASL) on behalf of the UK Secretary of State which includes the monitoring of States and carriers.

This is a high-profile role, working at the highest levels of aviation decision making, contributing to, and helping to create a better, fairer, and safer aviation environment.

The ASU will give you the opportunity to influence aviation safety at home and overseas.

By assessing third country operators and other states and ensuring that they meet international safety standards, you will play a vital role in managing the UK Air Safety List on behalf of the Secretary of State for Transport.


Core Accountabilities:


  • Assess and provide recommendations on the compliance of Third Country Operators (TCO) against globally established and agreed aviation safety standards.
  • Lead on safety determination cases, providing detailed investigations and multifactorial analyses of the performance of foreign airlines.
  • Establish information from a wide variety of verifiable sources of intelligence as well as maintain clear lines of communication with all key Stakeholders.
  • Ensure that the ASL is kept accurate, up to date, fair and that we are proliferating global aviation safety practices.
  • Ensure that applicable have the components in place to meet international safety standards.
  • Work with the operators, reviewing the initial and continued airworthiness compliance of their aircraft and ensure they have applied safety management system principles to their airworthiness process.
  • Monitor aviation safety sources to identify potential safety issues regarding these operators and work with them and their National Aviation Authority to ensure all safety issues are resolved to a satisfactory standard.
  • Establish a safety case providing evidence to the ASC that the operator no longer meets international safety standards and make a recommendation to prevent them operating into/out of UK airspace.
  • Work with operators who are currently on the UK ASL to provide evidence to the ASC.
  • Ensure that the National Aviation Authorities (NAAs) meet the required ICAO standards.
  • Build relationships with these NAA's to enable close liaison if / when you need to carry out an investigation involving one of their operators.
  • Communicate your oversight and findings following investigation, to the required third parties including, other Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) departments and the UK Department for Transport (DfT).
  • Ensure continuous improvement to international aviation safety standards.
  • Influence airworthiness issues both in the UK and internationally.

As an expert in airworthiness with years of experience in a Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisations (PtCAMO/CAMO) environment you are already qualified to assess the airworthiness of the fleet you manage.

Your background should also cover Initial and / or Continuing Airworthiness requirements and include practical experience of the oversight of Aircraft Maintenance Organisations (AMO), Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisations (CAMO) and Safety Management Systems (SMS).


Essential Skills:


  • Experience in a Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisations (PtCAMO/CAMO) enviroment.
  • Background of Initial and / or Continuing Airworthiness requirements
  • Practical experience of the oversight of Aircraft Maintenance Organisations (AMO), Continuing Airworthiness Management Organisations (CAMO) and Safety Management Systems (SMS).
  • Possess a detailed understanding and appreciation of internationally recognised Civil Aviation safety standards, practices, and regulatory frameworks, such as International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO), European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), International Air Transport Association (IATA), IASA.
  • An unrestricted ability to travel globally and able to travel to conduct safety assessments.
  • Effective and confident communicator, ensuring a diplomatic approach, and can influence and negotiate with key stakeholders including those at Ministerial levels.

Desirable:


  • Knowledge of Part 66 Certifying staff, Part 147 Technical training, EASA and FAA requirements.
