Principal Engineer - Coventry

Job description
Our purpose is taking care of life's essentials, but we're also big on making a difference, not just because we should but because we care.
AMP8, our next five-year regulatory period, will see us launch our biggest and most complex investment programme of almost £13bn, of which £6bn will be delivered through our capital programme.
This is more than double the size of the AMP7 capital programme and is an opportunity to drive real change.
Our new Plug and Play approach will be a collection of common parts that can be connected in different ways and work together (like rigs or tanks). They can be mixed and matched to create a whole range of different products.
Picture this as your ready-made catalogue of standard products. You can simply select the parts you need and then they arrive ready to go all in one.
This new innovative approach will help to combat the challenges of waste and water infrastructure, flooding and water quality. Be a part of something bringing benefits to our communities, health outcomes and environment.
Our Plug & Play methodology will enable us to build smarter, faster, safer, greener, and more affordable projects.
It could be the biggest challenge of your career. If you want to do more because you care, we'd love to talk to you.
We are looking for a Principal Design Engineer to work within our Plug & Play team, truly delivering for the future.
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
Do you have experience working within Mechanical Engineering? Are you a Principal Design Engineer looking for a new challenge? Do you like working in a fast paced and challenging environment?
You will be part of a team creating innovative plug and play designs for Mechanical engineering, design & specifications from the concept and optioneering stage through to the outline and detailed design stage co-ordinating multi-discipline design input to support where necessary.
Would you like to build your career in a place where you can grow?
You will deliver projects to programme, within budget, to the correct quality standards. Be part of developing the future design team
Within this role you will:
Lead on all technical aspects of opportunity assessment, feasibility, concept development and design for a variety of new infrastructure product and delivery process development projects.
You will drive innovation into every programme of work, looking for cost efficient solutions to a range of problems considering the whole life cost, safety and environmental impact of all proposed solutions.
The Principal Design Engineer shall lead on the Quality Assurance process for checking, reviewing, and approving the team's in-house design deliverables.
The Principal Design Engineer will work with a range of key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of solutions that meet the needs of the Customer, Key Stakeholders, and the regulatory requirements of OFWAT and the Environment Agency.
It is expected that the role holder will be comfortable developing innovative Mechanical engineering designs from first principles and be comfortable challenging established norms whilst robustly proving their solutions are feasible and safe.
The Principal Design Engineer will be expected to carry out all the duties of a principal designer for prototype programmes within the mechanical engineering space. E.g. water tank prototype.
You will play a key role in developing the technical capability of team members through coaching, mentoring and supporting the Design Managers and Business Leads to identify development opportunities for individual designers.
Create functional design specifications including consideration of: mechanical engineering, CDM regulations, health & safety / buildability / commissioning / operations and maintenance / HAZOPS / appropriate legislation & regulations.
You'll be ensuring that appropriate mechanical advice is provided to the project team so that the standard solution has an effective handshake between Severn Trent Product Team and Site Design Teams to enable proper installation of products on site
WHAT YOU'LL BRING TO THE ROLE
Of course, it's important that we attract the right skill sets, and those with the right experience but we value character, positivity and a caring attitude in equal weight.
We want people who show up and roll their sleeves up. Restless spirits who are ready to be part of something bigger, who care, who really care... because when you really care, you'll go above and beyond. When you really care you don't just talk about it, you do more.
We will be looking for someone who has:
- Engineering experience within an R&D environment, probably with a background including mechanical engineering.
- Extensive experience of developing new and innovative design solutions to a wide range of engineering problems.
- Be able to demonstrate experience of proving the reliability and effectiveness of new solutions through robust test procedures.
- Proven innovation of design to assist with the development of innovative solutions in the delivery of projects.
- Experience of working to standards, codes and design manuals.
- Strong coaching skills and experience of building capability within a Design team.
- Extensive experience of influencing a disparate set of stakeholders to deliver design objectives.
- Practice of managing a product life cycle
- Degree qualified or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline.
