Hills Road Sixth Form College is looking for two enthusiastic and reliable receptionist to staff our main reception between the hours of 8.00am and 5.00pm.

You will be an excellent communicator with a warm and approachable disposition and enjoy working with a wide variety of people, in particular young adults.

Ideally you will have relevant experience of working in a busy reception area or other customer service environment.

Information for applicants
The College Receptionists are at the hub of this highly regarded and very successful sixth form college.

Located in a purpose-built area in the attractive 1904 building which fronts onto Hills Road, a small team staffs the College Reception Monday to Friday 8.00am to 5.00pm, with some summer holiday cover also required.

The team supports the College community of just under 2,800 daytime sixth form students, plus Adult Education evening students and around 350 staff, as well as welcoming numerous visitors to the College.


The Post
The role is part-time, during term-time, with some additional cover required for the summer holidays during busy periods.

A degree of flexibility is needed as there may also be a requirement to cover for colleagues from time to time.

The term-time hours are 22.5 per week. There are two roles available. Five mornings Monday to Friday 8.00am pmOrFive afternoons Monday to Friday 12.30pm to 5.00pm.

There may be an element of flexibility in the role.


There will also be a requirement to work one or both of the College's two Open Events which usually take place in July.

One is held on a Saturday and the other is usually a Monday evening. Time is given in lieu of working these events.

You will ideally have relevant experience of working in a reception area, although full training will be provided.

You will be an excellent communicator with a warm and approachable disposition and enjoy working with a wide variety of people, in particular young adults.

Hours of Work:
Part-time, 22.5 hours per week. Actual hours to be agreed.

Main Duties:


  • Receive visitors to the College, issue visitors' badges and log visitors on the visitor spreadsheet
  • Manage messages from the telephone mailbox system and relay as appropriate
  • Manage incoming and outgoing post
  • Act as a central referral point during fire evacuation, checking that fire wardens have reported in and alerting the Director of Estates & Facilities of any problems
  • Act as central point for matters of caretaking and communicate with caretakers, catering and IT over the radio
  • General administration tasks for college departments e.g. mass mailings, data entry into Excel spreadsheets, maintaining logs, researching data online and similar tasks in support of college activities.
  • Ordering of taxis and couriers as required
  • Issue and logging of temporary staff badges
  • Update the College telephone directory termly liaising with other receptionists and HR as necessary
  • Liaise with the receptionists who work on other shifts to ensure the efficient execution of all duties and responsibilities as part of handover
  • Assist with other duties as appropriate which may include reciprocal cover on Student Services Reception.
