The Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals is looking for a dynamic and innovative Senior Midwife who is passionate about ensuring women and babies receive safe, high-quality care, to join the Clinical Board as a senior clinical leader.

This post is a key professional leadership role within the organisation, accountable for providing the professional leadership of Midwives. Working closely with the senior leadership team, you will lead the operational and strategic direction of the maternity service.
Interview Date: 14 June 202- 37 hours 30 minutes/week


Promoting a culture of learning and sharing, the Head of Midwifery, alongside the Director of Midwifery, will provide expert advice on midwifery issues, clinical governance, quality, and risk, to the Clinical Board and wider Corporate Teams.

Providing an expert educational and research resource, you will be visible and accessible, act as a clinically credible role model, and provide insightful, inspirational, and dynamic leadership to the multi-professional team.


The post holder will be actively involved with the LMNS, ICB, and regional and national providers of maternity services, working collaboratively in partnership across the region with key stakeholders in leading change.

Deputising for the Director of Midwifery, this senior professional role will have strong professional links with colleagues across the Trust, including the Chief Nurse Team.

  • This post is a key professional leadership role within the organisation, accountable for providing the professional leadership of midwives working closely with the Director of Midwifery, Head of Obstetrics, Directorate Manager (DM) and Clinical Director (CD) in leading the operational and strategic direction of the midwifery service and ensuring highly effective midwifery and nursing practice.
  • The Head of Midwifery has responsibility for the leadership and management of midwifery across the Maternity Service, including the line management of Matrons.
  • The Head of Midwifery, alongside the Director of Midwifery, will provide expert advice on midwifery issues, clinical governance, quality, and risk, to the Clinical Board and wider Corporate and Chief Nurse Teams.
  • Accept personal responsibility for the nursing and midwifery workforce within maternity services, holding others directly accountable for delivering what has been agreed in relation to objectives, service plans and commissioned targets.
  • The Head of Midwifery will lead the development and consistent delivery of high clinical standards of care, clinical policies and guidelines for midwifery and nursing, in line with evidencebased practice.
  • Contributing to the identification of practice and professional development needs of midwifery staff, the Head of Midwifery will provide expert advice and support to senior leaders within the organisation in relation to issues of professional practice.
  • Promote a culture of learning and sharing of good practice across maternity services in relation to Clinical Risk, Patient Safety and Risk Management.
