To work with and support the Practice Development Lead (PDL) for Theatres, assisting in the development of theatre practice in line with service delivery and the strategic plans for the division and the Trust.

The post holder will be expected to support the PDL in ensuring the quality of patient care is optimised with effective evidence-based Theatre standards and policies.

The role will involve assisting with regular training needs analysis across all the theatre suites and assisting to implement, produce and review practice development programmes for theatre practitioners of all grades.

The post holder will be committed to providing research and evidence-based practice whilst working as part of and supporting a multi-professional team.

To support students in practice placements in relation to the learning in the practice environment for both student and mentors to meet the requirements of their roles


To create a positive learning environment for all staff and students within the department, promoting an area conducive to practice based learning and development.

To act as a mentor to junior and unqualified staff in educational, professional and development activities.

The post holder will be expected to participate in clinical duties in conjunction with this role and as the service requires

To represent the PDL and Theatres at higher educational establishments, acting as the link practitioner for student nurses/ODPs, either directly coordinating or allocating and delegating the placement of the student, you will be required to liaise with all student leads within the department to ensure capacity is at its maximum and that they have access to the required skills that are needed to achieve competencies.

Carry out interviews with the students to make sure they are on target and problem solve where required.

Highlight any concerns to the PDL so that Cause for concerns can be raised appropriately and in a timely manner to prevent delays to training


You will be expected to understand all PADS that the students use and have guided discussions / teaching sessions to cover skills that are not always available due to exposure and availability of surgery.

To motivate and inspire others to ensure clinical excellence, promoting awareness and cascading information regarding best practice and research.

Ensure the Team Leaders are kept appraised of any problems in the Theatres.

To maintain staff morale through effective communication.

Regularly responsible for the professional /clinical supervision and allocation of students.

To promote and develop a culture of reflection, to enhance professional learning and development.


To ensure that own skills and knowledge are updated in line with professional and national developments and the requirements of the post.


To act as a clinical expert and resource in own area of care, demonstrating a sound underpinning knowledge base and highly developed clinical skills.

Demonstrate the knowledge and competencies to safely operate and use any specialist equipment required during the peri-operative phase.

Provide in-service training for specialist equipment to more inexperienced Theatre staff.

To meet and assess all new starters with the PDL and establish individualised training plans in conjunction with the Team leader, to
