An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner/Plaster Technician to join the team in our busy plaster room at University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

We cover the adult and children service so you will be working in theatres, ED, wards and outpatient clinics within the Adult and Children's hospitals.


You will work closely with qualified orthopaedic practitioners and the multi-disciplinary team providing support to all patients that require casting, splinting and wound care.

In return you will have the opportunity to develop the skills required and we will fund your casting course.

This will be in Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, over 6 months as day release to obtain your BOA qualification in Casting.


You will be expected to work as a Band 3 trainee for two years being observed in the clinical setting of Childrens and Adult services that at times you will be exposed to significant trauma that may be distressing.

You will need skills of dexterity with good hand, eye and sensory co-ordination.

Provide care with instructions and training received, in a comprehensive service for adults and children.

To undertake work involving specialist skills following satisfactory assessment and competence under direction of a senior orthopaedic practitioner i.e.

  • Application of temporary casts
  • Application of casts in Plaster of Paris and Synthetic Casting Tapes
  • Application of splints and braces
  • Use the cast removal system
  • Accurately record treatment / care plans in ward and emergency department patient records
  • Use the PACS system and develop an understanding of Xray interpretation
  • Basic wound care
  • Mobilising patients safely, using walking aids
  • To participate in the assessment, planning and evaluation of care for the patient who is requiring casting or splinting referring to the clinician as required
  • Communicate effectively with patients, visitors and the multidisciplinary team
  • To provide the relevant verbal and written information to the patients and carers
