BOSUN JOB DESCRIPTION

Hours Required - Average 35 hrs per week, rotating schedule. (41hrs & 27hrs)

Reporting to - Yard Supervisor.

MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
To support all Club racing through the maintenance and issuing of race equipment and boats to members. Support and, on occasions, deliver RYA training at the Club. Ensure all sailing activities on water can take place.

Need to be capable of basic boat maintenance, very organised, work on own initiative, have excellent time keeping and forward planning skills.

Some flexibility is required to be available at periods of peak boat usage but will be part of a team sharing the work.


DUTIES - To organise time to do the following -

SAILING

  • At the start of the day, display the day's shipping movements, pumpout any boats necessary and support members arriving to use the equipment.
  • During the day, progress resolution of snags, prepare for events, undertake maintenance (see below) communications and record keeping
  • First thing in the morning and at the end of the day, check all boats are secure and safety equipment ready for the day / following day, inspect logs and allocate functional RIBs for the following day.
  • Assist on water or as Beach Master ashore if required.
  • Platform & Committee Boat "Ron Cox" ensure fully equipped and up to Club standards.
  • Understand racing rules, marks, flags, course boards and any other information relating to this.
  • Prepare the equipment necessary and provide support during major events and club racing.

The most high-profile events being:

  • Youth Week sort all boats, provide support/paperwork, help with kit for other activities. Assist with moving things around. Help with any sailing related issues.
  • Poole Week provide support and help with anything sailing related.
  • International Poole Regatta provide support and help with anything sailing related.
  • Liaise with Honorary Sailing Secretary and Sailing Office on what is needed for sailing.
  • Attend sailing meetings as required.
  • Help Sailing Coordinator and Assistant organise Club run courses.
  • Help Sailing Coordinator and Assistant organise Club Racing and Open Meetings, getting kit ready, liaise with Harbour control, PRO before and during event.
  • Liaise with safety boat drivers, mark layers, order equipment, get weather report.
  • Supervise beach cover and any troubleshooting where necessary.
  • Deal with any queries at end of racing and recheck returned kit.

TRAINING

  • Keep RYA operating procedures up to date and organise RYA Inspection.
  • Manage Sailing Instructors and make sure their qualifications are up to date.
  • Class Training oversee all aspects of Youth and Class training.
  • Maintain training course related equipment.
  • RYA liaise with and be aware of changes in policies and implement these where related to the Club.

MAINTENANCE

  • Proactively maintain a preventative maintenance schedule for all Club boats, including RIBs, Committee Boat, Jenny's, Nelsons and sailing dinghies, ensuring a rolling programme is delivered through the whole year.
  • On a daily basis check boat log, fix easy faults and maintain a rolling snag log for the use of onsite marine engineer and visiting radio and other specialists.
  • Liaise with Marine Engineer for maintenance of Club boats and order parts as and when necessary.
  • In the summer 6 months, working with Yard colleagues, pull the RIBs regularly and carry out required maintenance.
  • In the autumn and winter 6 months, working with Yard colleagues carry out annual maintenance including the sanding and antifoul of the 10 club RIBs on a rolling programme.
  • Advise on replacement of any equipment when needed.
  • Club VHF Radios maintain, keep records of and allocate, charge and replace when necessary, ensure we have enough to cover Open and Club sailing events.
  • Fixed Race Marks and Inflatables maintain, refurbish, and replace when necessary. Ensure marks are always race ready. Annually, review inflatable marks with Honorary Sailing Secretary.
  • Flags and Anchors keep regular checks to ensure we have the right quantity and replace where necessary.
  • The Bosun is part of a Yard team and is expected to be a team player helping them at peak times (e.g., when yachts are being lifted into yard in Autumn and into the water for Easter) and yard staff will be available to assist at peak times for the Bosun.

CLUB/ADMIN

  • Comply with PYC Health and Safety policy and highlight any concerns to the Marina Manager and General Manager.
  • Locking up where necessary.
  • Help in yard when needed.
  • Haven have knowledge of Berthing, Haul Outs, Electric to be able to refer Club members and visitors to the right person and where to get relevant forms.
  • Slipway liaise with yard to keep slipway in a safe and clean state so that it is fit for use.
  • First Aid Boxes and Defibrillators keep up to date and replenish as necessary.
