Head of Engineering
Reporting to the Group Head of Capex and Engineering the primary purpose of this role is to provide leadership in and take accountability for delivery of Engineering activities across the DS Smith Capital portfolio; develop and implement a set of integrated technical standards, addressing current business needs while also considering future requirements, and demonstrating excellent value for money; become a trusted technical resource for the wider DS Smith Group; and lead the development of a world class maintenance framework.
The individual will be a key member of the Engineering Leadership Team, providing strategic engineering leadership, quality control, technical excellence, and innovation, whilst developing a high performing team skilled in providing innovative and cost-effective Engineering solutions.
Your key responsibilities
- Build a small Engineering Centre of excellence that ensures coverage across the capital project portfolio. Support Technical Excellence teams in the Divisions on process equipment, and lead on nonprocess / infrastructure.
- Ensure that the expectations of Divisional Capex Heads and their line managers (Divisional / Regional Managing Directors) are considered in the development of the technical standards and that strong reciprocal relationships are established from the outset.
- Establish standards and expectations for technical compliance with regulatory standards for design, inspection, construction, installation, testing and maintenance of our production assets and infrastructure.
- Proactively engage in external benchmarking and the identification of latest engineering trends.
- Ensure that lessons learned during the project delivery phase and operational lifecycle are centrally recorded, implemented across current and future projects, and communicated back to relevant functions.
- Foster strong relationships between the Engineering Project Manager and "customer" on each project to ensure that finished projects are fit for purpose, scalable and fully support the current and projected needs of the Business Project Manager's business going forward.
- Support project teams in the prequalification and selection of Engineering delivery partners.
- Develop and own a Value Engineering toolkit to ensure projects balance current and future functionality with capital and operational cost.
- Work with the divisional teams to establish a fit for purpose maintenance framework.

About you
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field of equivalent experience (Masters degree preferred)
- Membership of recognised engineering institution.
- Substantial knowledge of health and safety legislation and practices.
- Proponent of valuedriven engineering solutions.
- Ability to lead and motivate a team of multidisciplined individuals, setting clear goals and objectives and measuring performance against them.
- Understands workings of the organisation and demonstrates an ability to communicate at all levels in the organisation and to key stakeholders out with the organisation.
- Extensive knowledge of engineering processes and standardisation across multiple industries with an ability to balance the need for compliance with effective and efficient operation, and financial tradeoffs.
- Experience in building alliances with external partners and agencies to "bring the outside in", bringing a fresh perspective with technological and thought leadership, and developing innovative solutions to current and future challenges.
