Description

To lead the Antenatal and Newborn Screening service and establish an infrastructure that will deliver a level of service which is equitable, evidence based and consistent with the recommendations and standards of the UK National Screening Committee (UK NSC) To act as the professional lead for the day to day management, evaluation and quality assuranceof the screening process including the provision of digital screening information, the screening procedures and any onward referral.

To work closely with the Risk and Governance team and participate in investigations of antenatal and newborn screening incidents and share learning from incidents and changes in practice with staff.

To operate and monitor all failsafe system to identify, as early as possible, mothers and babies that may have missed or where screening results are incomplete across the antenatal and newborn screening and vaccination programmes.

To liaise with NHS England (NHSE) and Quality Assurance (QA), by participating in national Quality Assurance processes, reporting on key performance indicators (KPIs),risks and audits.

To undertake reviews as requested by QA teams with a timely response to any recommendations.

To work collaboratively with the education lead to ensure that health professionals involved in ANNB screening keep up to date with nationally approved training programmes, maintain professional registration where appropriate and comply with safeguarding requirements.

To provide expert advice, guidance and support to all healthprofessionals involved in antenatal and newborn screening programme and be conversant with the recommendations and standards of the UK National Screening Committee.

To provide expert advice on antenatal and newborn screening to women and their families offering support, guidance and counselling as required.


To work with midwifery and neonatal unit managers to ensure that there is a consistent approach to antenatal and newborn screening in all clinical areas and the community setting.

To maintain and develop midwifery skills, be research aware and implement best practice. Act in line with national policies and guidance such as NICE,SBLv3.

To coordinate of the following programmes including screening and on-going care: Sickle cell and Thalassaemia linked antenatal and newborn screening programme, Downs syndrome, Edwards and Pataus first trimester screening First trimester fetal anomalies including Spina Bifida, Gastroschisis Infectious diseases screening in pregnancy Newborn blood spot screening (NBBS) Newborn infant physical examination (NIPE) Newborn hearing screening Immunisation programmes including BCG and Hepatitis B for newborns Genetic screening in pregnancy |Oversight of Low Papp-a screening follow up (SBLv3) Managing screening incidents for all listed programmes Professional and Leadership To provide professional role modelling, to lead and inspire the professional development of the antenatal and newborn screening team.


  • To demonstrate effective communication with all staff ensuring dissemination and exchange of information. To represent the ANNB screening team and attend internal and external forums as required. To encourage a compassionate culture, respectful of individual and organisational needs.


To seek clinical supervision and professional midwifery advocacy where required To conduct oneself in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Trust policies.

To take responsibility for self-development through the appraisal system and work towards completing agreed personal development plan.

To demonstrate up to date knowledge and understanding of national, Trust and Directorate issues and priorities, to facilitate clear leadership and direction.

To be involved in the organisational and strategic development of the team/department within the Trust including effective utilisation of resources to meet the current demand within a defined budget and available resources To have a contributory responsibility to managing the budget for Antenatal screening and be an authorised signatory for staff time sheets and stock orders.

To encourage and support staff within their working practice, maintaining confidentiality.

To provide effective leadership in implementing the Trust Clinical Governance and Nursing and Midwifery Strategy To ensure clinical governance encompasses continuous quality improvement that focuses on high quality care.

Take an active role in management of clinical risk in line with Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust Risk Management Policy and the national clinical governance agenda.

Be proactive in evaluating and developing evidence-based midwifery practice and using effective change management strategies to support staff to embed changes in practice.


To manage sickness and absence effectively in accordance with Trust policies and procedures To promote and maintain a safe, welcoming and comfortable environment for the women, birthing people,their families and staff.
