Kitchen & Cafe Manager
You will work with: Kitchen & Café Manager, The Weekend Café Manager, our Trainees and Spa School.

About The School House Cafe
The School House Café is a 23 seat cafe adjacent to Spa School, Monnow Road in Bermondsey. Spa is a specialist secondary school for children and young people (aged with Autistic Spectrum
Disorders (ASD).

The school runs the café during school hours and providing food and coffee to the community as well as work experience for students.


CareTrade run the School House Café at weekends to provide real work experience to autistic adults interested in working in catering and hospitality.

Our current traineeship programme here has been running since 2019 and we support trainees to gain practical skills and qualifications to support them on their journeys towards greater independence and employment.

All food served is freshly prepared and made on site.


Core Responsibilities:


  • Work in The School House Café on weekends, dates and times to be arranged with the Manager
  • Help train the Trainee Café Assistants
  • Prepare coffee and food including baking bread, cakes and pastries, making sandwiches and salads, cooking.
  • Help restock/refill items as necessary.
  • Help check stock in fridge for out-of-date products and dispose of as necessary.
  • Customer service including taking orders, serving customers and cash handling.
  • Help maintain coffee machine including set up, cleaning and refilling with beans.
  • Help ensure café is ready for customers on opening (e.g. tables and chairs out, steps are swept).
  • Create a welcoming and professional environment.
  • To work closely with Manager to develop the café.
  • To help raise awareness of autism amongst customers.
  • To keep the café clean and ensure a high standard of hygiene.
  • To ensure food safety guidelines and laws are adhered to.
  • To ensure a Healthy and Safe working environment for self, staff, volunteers and customers.

General Responsibilities:


  • To participate in staff training as required.
  • Promote a positive image of autism, the Project, Project partners and organisations andCareTrade.
  • Co-operate with all CareTrade and Spa School staff in maintaining good relationships with outside agencies and the general public in order to promote the charity and win increased support for its work
  • Co-operate with all CareTrade and Spa School staff in maintaining harmonious inter-personal relationships. Ensure that your conduct within and outside of your work place does not conflict with professional expectations.
  • Ensure an awareness and observation of Fire and Health and Safety Regulations at the work place.
  • Ensure the respect, dignity and rights to privacy of both trainees and staff as far as possible.

Travel:
Not generally.


Hours:
Up to 12 hours per week over weekends (6 hrs on a Saturday and 6 hrs on a Sunday).

£12 per hour plus holiday pay (paid on an accrual basis) and

Pressures Inherent in Job:

Working in a small community café whilst supporting autistic adults; who may display anxiety, communication and social difficulties and other complex behaviours.

A professional and flexible approach is required in order to maintain and enhance the reputation of the project and of CareTrade and Spa School.
