Full-Time Funeral Service Operative


Stephen P Gay/Lewis Solomon Funeral Service, an independent, family-owned and run funeral company, require a very special person to join our team who are dedicated to serving families at one of the most difficult times in their lives.

We currently have a position for a Funeral Service Operative situated at our Gravesend office.


This position requires a high degree of professionalism and integrity and requires the employee to uphold the impeccable standards that we set at Stephen P Gay/Lewis Solomon and contribute to the smooth and efficient running of all four branches.

You would need to have a full, clean driving license and be immaculately turned out, although a uniform will be provided.

Funeral Operatives are expected to act as ambassadors for us in their dealings with the public and to show care and concern, especially to bereaved families and also to their colleagues.


The company will expect a high level of commitment and loyalty and Funeral Operatives must be prepared to work for as long as is reasonably necessary to accomplish his/her tasks.


Job Details
Starting Salary £20,800 a year

28 Days holiday including Bank holidays.

Primary Roles

  • You report to the manager and company directors. With the support of the management, contribute to the smooth daytoday running of all aspects of the branches that you operate in, working closely with the team of Funeral Directors, Administrators and Drivers/Bearers.
  • Your work may or may not be designated to a specific branch of Stephen P Gay/Lewis Solomon, but in any event, there must be a willingness to assist at other branches when the need arises.
  • Affecting the removal of the deceased from the place of death and bringing them into our care.
  • Ordering coffin accessories, gowns, and other workshop and mortuary supplies, as well as cleaning and first aid materials, controlling and maintaining appropriate stock levels.
  • Preparing and fitting coffins, including engraving nameplates.
  • Take responsibility for the general running, tidiness and cleanliness of the workshop, mortuary, yard and garage areas, including receiving coffins and other deliveries.
  • Preparing the deceased for burial or cremation, including placing them in coffins and preparing them for viewings.
  • Perform viewings in the chapel of rest.
  • Maintaining, washing, cleaning, polishing and driving all vehicles used on within the business.
  • Take part in the outofhours rota for removals.
  • Assist with the smooth running of the coroners' contract.
  • Carry out the functions of a driver/bearer.
  • Carry out cover for branch offices during periods of holiday/sickness
  • Assisting with the decoration and maintenance of the company's premises
  • Answering the telephone in a polite professional manner.
  • A clean and smart appearance.
  • Caring, empathetic and confident nature.
  • Understand and be able to address the needs of the bereaved.
  • A competent administrator, accurate, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Computer literate in MS Word and Excel.
  • Flexible attitude adaptable to the needs of the organisation.
  • Demonstrate a calm, efficient and compassionate demeanour.
  • Reliability, honesty and a commitment to maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • Driving of the company fleet will be required, so a full clean driving license is essential.
