Marine Biotech is currently seeking a graduate technicianto join our team. This position is a hands-on role that will be responsible for assisting the Marine Biotech team to achieve success.

The job includes several tasks


The primary responsibilities are:

  • Production of juvenile clawed lobsters.
  • Live feed '_Artemia_' production
  • Lobster larvae rearing and husbandry consisting of feeding, counting, moving larval and juvenile lobsters through the production process, size and stage tracking, and reporting of mortality.
  • Feeding, cleaning and conditioning of broodstock lobsters and associated rearing systems.
  • Maintaining and reporting water quality.
  • Maintenance and routine cleaning of recirculating aquaculture systems associated pipework and rearing vessels.
  • Packing and sending lobsters to customers.
  • Ability to recognise and find the possible solution to problems.
  • Ensure a high standard of cleanliness and biosecurity.
  • Complete daily check sheets and data entry.
  • Clear and timely communication of data.
  • Working independently and flexibly to meet changing demands.

Other tasks may include:

  • Maintaining and assisting with other shellfish populations feeding, cleaning data capture.
  • Participate in systems maintenance throughout the entire hatchery site.


The incumbent will work independently to meet daily, weekly, and monthly production and research goals, under the guidance of the hatchery manager and technical officer at our facility in Orkney, Scotland.


  • Have a keen interest in aquaculture, especially in hatchery operations

  • Have an ability to work flexible hours on a rotating hatchery roster (working 5 days out of 7, including some weekend work)
  • Be a team player
  • Be an effective communicator at multiple levels
  • Strive to continuously build knowledge and skills
  • Have a full UK driver's license
  • Have a right to work in the UK

Hours - nominally 37.5hrs per week. Some weekend and evening duties will be required so a flexible outlook to duty periods will be necessary. Where hours exceed the stated, time off in lieu may be considered and is at discretion of the hatchery manager.


Accommodation - A room in the shared company-owned housing available to rent for the first three months for the successful applicant if required, whilst alternative accommodation is found.

Holiday entitlement - Initially 20 days plus National/Local bank holidays (or time off in lieu)

Pension arrangements - A workplace pension scheme will be provided as required by UK legislation.
