Here at The Isle of Wight College we work with a number of employers, in a vast array of industries. A fantastic opportunity has arisen to work for Gatten and Lake Primary School as a Property Maintenance Apprentice.


Welcome to Gatten and Lake Primary school a wonderful one-form entry school, which is situated in the town of Shanklin, adjacent to Lake.

We are a coastal school, just a short distance from the beach but also in close proximity to the local woodland, America Woods, and next to the school site is the county ground.


Under the instructions / guidance of appropriate senior staff - provide maintenance and security services on school sites and premises.

To develop and maintain a generic skill set that allows the Isle of Wight Council to employ your skills, abilities and experience across the Council and its formal partnerships as needed.

  • Ensuring safe and clear access to the school at all times and particularly in relation to inclement weather
  • Visual check of the building/s and grounds every morning and evening and reporting any concerns/risks to their Line Manager
  • Accompany external contractors (where required)
  • Dispose of waste materials in a safe and hygienic manner and ensure they are ready for collection
  • Undertake portaging tasks as required
  • Undertake appropriate repairs e.g. redecorating and fixing.
  • Undertake minor / simple repairs e.g. minor plumbing, changing light bulbs unblocking drains.
  • To organise and carry out various maintenance duties to ensure that the general upkeep and maintenance of the premises is satisfactory, as per specific schedule for your school.
  • To organise and carry out minor decoration programme as agreed with the Headteacher.
  • To organise and carry out minor improvement work e.g. erecting shelves, notice boards, bookshelves etc. as agreed with the Headteacher.
  • To be responsible for the operation of a preventative planned maintenance programme and for routine inspections of the buildings, fixtures, fittings, furniture, premises and grounds to assess for minor work or repairs required to be carried out to maintain safe and satisfactory conditions.
  • Operation and maintenance of heating plant and lighting systems.
  • To oversee and monitor the electrical testing of portable electrical appliances and to maintain the appropriate records.
  • Undertake regular site inspections and identify and record repair and maintenance requirements.
  • Identify defects and record repair and maintenance requirements.
  • Collect and assemble waste for removal.
  • Undertake emergency and specialist cleaning tasks.
  • Undertake cleaning duties such as graffiti removal, litterpicking.
  • Provide emergency access to the school site.
  • Coordinate deliveries to the school site.
  • Monitor performance of contracts and record performance against specified standards.
  • Liaise with contractors and undertake client role in connection with premisesrelated contracts.
  • Coordinate work of cleaning staff.
  • Ensure that satisfactory levels of caretaking, cleanliness and hygiene are achieved and maintained through the whole of the premises.
  • Ensure that pathways and all other external hard surface areas are kept clean, free of litter and weeds and that they are gritted or salted when required during wintry conditions.

Qualifications Required
Grade C or above at GCSE (or equivalent level) in English and Maths.


Working Week
30 hours - split shift work pattern to be discussed and agreed including 1 day per week at college.


Weekly Wage
The employer is paying the NWM or NLW dependant on your age

Under 18 £144 per week

18-20 £205 per week

21-22 £275 per week

23+ £285 per week

Apprenticeship Standard

Level 2 Property Maintenance Standard

Apprenticeship duration will be between 24 months + 3 Month End Point Assessment

Functional Skills - if not already achieved a GCSE C/4 (or above) in maths and English (or equivalent qualification)

There is a requirement to complete off job training, College attendance will contribute but time spen
